The death of a Cuban in Guyana following a traffic accident has caused an outcry, while the driver involved is facing legal proceedings free on bail.

The deceased was identified as Yohanis Urquiaga Zulueta, 46 years old, who lost his life on April 17 after being struck by a truck on the Héroes highway, near the Anteater roundabout. According to reports from the local press, the Cuban was riding an unregistered electric bicycle when the accident occurred.

According to information published by Guyana Times, the driver of the vehicle, Henry Steffon Onassis, 25 years old, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving. The young man appeared before the Diamond/Grove Magistrate's Court, where he pleaded not guilty after the charges were read.

Despite the seriousness of the case, the court granted him bail in the amount of 350,000 Guyanese dollars. As part of the imposed conditions, he must report weekly to a police station while the judicial process continues, with the next hearing scheduled for May 12.

Reports released by Guyana Express specify that the accident occurred around 5:10 PM and that the truck involved belongs to a resident of Timehri. Authorities formally charged the driver days after the incident, under the current legislation regarding traffic and road safety in that country.

The case once again highlights the risks faced by Cubans abroad, many of whom are in precarious conditions or engaging in informal work, especially in transit countries like Guyana.

So far, there have been no statements from the victim's family or details about their immigration status, but their death adds to the long list of Cubans who have lost their lives far from the island, amid routes marked by uncertainty.
