Anaísta Mayo Puente, an 18-year-old resident of Marianao, Havana, remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Juan Manuel Márquez Pediatric Hospital following an accident that occurred early Saturday morning, April 25, in the area known as "the eight roads."
Her cousin, Yudeyvis Reinoso, publicly reported through a live stream on Facebook that the young woman went out that night with her ex-boyfriend, Alejandro Carbonell Mora, aged 24, and that videos found on Anaísta's phone show that they were both participating in an illegal motorcycle race.
"We discovered that they were in a motorcycle race from the videos on my cousin's phone. Because he never mentioned that they were in a motorcycle race," Reinoso stated.
Anaísta was found unconscious at the scene. A person present performed CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to restore her pulse before she was transferred to the National Hospital and then to the pediatric hospital in Marianao.
The family learned of the event on Saturday the 25th at 9 in the morning through a neighbor who works in intensive care, not from the companion.
The young woman underwent a nine-hour surgery on her head. "They removed two pieces of skull, which are the bones, and they are keeping them in her abdomen so that in about a month, in 40 days, in 25 days, if she recovers, they can put them back, because her brain is too swollen," her cousin explained.
At the time of the report, Anaísta was intubated, in a coma, with a fever and unresponsive to stimuli.
The family points out multiple irregularities in the police actions. Carbonell Mora does not have a driver's license, and the motorcycle he was riding was borrowed; the motorcycles involved disappeared from the scene before the police arrived; and the alleged person responsible for the crash is currently under precautionary measures but remains at liberty.
Reinoso also reported that the police instructor in charge of the case stated that Anaísta "did not have family," despite the fact that the young woman was at her relatives' home on the night of the accident.
A detail that the family considers crucial is that Carbonell Mora did not suffer any injuries. "Nothing happened to you; supposedly, there was a collision, and you came out unscathed."
"All of her blows are to the head and are in a serious condition with danger to life. You don't have a friction burn, you don't have a scratch, you don't have a bruise, you don't have anything," Reinoso argued.
The cousin also accuses the young man's father of having connections with a government official in Marianao, which she believes would explain the inaction of the local police unit.
"His father has some acquaintances that he manages for a government official here in Marianao," she pointed out.
The case is situated within a serious road accident crisis in Cuba, where illegal motorcycle races are a recurring phenomenon.
In January of this year, a young man died in Contramaestre during an illegal race after colliding with a trailer. In September 2025, a police operation in Pinar del Río dismantled illegal races leading to arrests and vehicle seizures.
According to data from the National Road Safety Commission, in 2025 Cuba recorded 7,538 traffic accidents, with 750 fatalities and 6,718 injuries; 63% of the cases involved motorcycles and 31% of drivers were unlicensed.
"Díaz Canel, it’s you I’m addressing, because these are your leaders, your pawns. I want justice and I will not be silenced until justice is served for my cousin," warned Reinoso, who promised to publish all the videos from the day of the accident and continue live broadcasts until he receives a response from the authorities.
