A tragic traffic accident shook the early morning of January 25 for the residents of Macario, in the Contramaestre municipality, Santiago de Cuba, involving the violent collision of a trailer and a racing motorcycle right at the entrance of the municipal hospital.
The incident resulted in one death and at least one injury.
The tragic event was reported by communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who described a chilling scene on Facebook.
"Several people were lying on the asphalt, while scattered remains of the motorcycle, completely destroyed after the crash, were observed around," he reported.
"The motorcycle became lodged in the truck's wheels, and the impact threw the occupants several meters away," he added.
As a result of the collision, the death of Damián Pérez, 26 years old, was confirmed; he lost his life instantly at the scene. He was originally from the town of La Maya but resided in Contramaestre.
In addition, at least one person has been reported injured and was rushed to a nearby hospital. His name is Brian Jr. Gandalia, and his current health status is unknown.
The incident sparked a wave of reactions on Facebook, where many users linked the tragedy to illegal motorcycle races that, according to reports, frequently occur in the area.
A housewife wrote: "Every night those motorcycles can be heard racing... the Traffic Police need to do something about it because everyone knows."
Another resident of Contramaestre commented that "motorcyclists think they have more control over the road than any other vehicle, and these are the consequences."
Many agreed that excessive speed and lack of control are constantly putting drivers and pedestrians at risk.
A woman reported that "in Trocha, it's the entire dawn with motorcycle races," and another user stated: "Here in Contramaestre, it seems like the traffic authorities have passed away," referring to the lack of effective controls.
Several comments emphasized that many drivers operate without experience or safety measures. "They're no longer motorcycles, they're planes on the road... often without a license or helmet," wrote a neighbor.
The accident in Macario once again brings to the forefront the dangers of racing motorcycles in the hands of inexperienced riders and the lack of actions to curb illegal races that, according to the community itself, occur night after night in Contramaestre.
