The internet user PM Revuelta posted on Facebook a heart-wrenching report about the brutal assault her brother suffered at the hands of a group of criminals 17 days ago, in an incident she describes as a premeditated attempt on his life.
According to the author herself, her brother—who suffers from a complex mental illness—was beaten with bats wrapped in barbed wire for confronting a neighborhood scammer who had deceived multiple residents with impunity.
"Seventeen days ago, my brother was the target of an assassination attempt; they attacked him with bats, with all the premeditation in the world, using barbed wire as a weapon to inflict irreparable wounds that have cost him two surgeries, one organ, and damage to others," wrote the complainant.
The young man survived, but the cost was incredibly high: two surgical procedures, the loss of an organ, and damage to others.
"What was his mistake? Making a plea for awareness to a despicable being who had defrauded many people in the neighborhood with impunity," the activist noted, outraged by the violence unleashed against someone who simply tried to defend their community.
The young woman describes her brother as a person loved by everyone, with good social behavior and a helpful demeanor towards the less fortunate, which makes the attack even more painful.
"Seventeen days ago, my community has been shaken, my life shattered, and that child has fought stoically to keep breathing," he wrote.
The case occurs in the context of an unprecedented public security crisis in Cuba, where the Cuban Citizen Audit Observatory (OCAC) recorded 2,833 verified crimes in 2025, a 115% increase compared to 2024 and a 337% increase compared to 2023.
Havana was the third most affected province, with 398 recorded cases, in a scenario where the Cuban police face a 20% desertion rate among their forces and is systematically criticized for prioritizing political repression over citizen protection.
This structural impunity has led to extreme situations: a young Cuban lost a hand in a confrontation with thieves in broad daylight, and the neighbors are forced to confront criminals on their own due to the state's inaction.
PM Revuelta is not unfamiliar with the regime's repression: approximately six months ago, State Security shut down her social media accounts while she was transporting over two tons of humanitarian aid to Santiago de Cuba, which forced her to create an alternative account.
"Six months ago, the SE shut down my networks when I was leaving with more than 2 tons of humanitarian aid for Santiago, which was delivered into the hands of the people, a determined people and victims of a system that is preoccupied with pursuing those of us who are committed," he denounced.
Now, amidst the family nightmare, the activist reports new attempts to hack and delete her Facebook profile, which she attributes to state agents.
Despite the pain, the day before its publication, he delivered solar panels and electrical generation equipment to seven children with leukemia, cerebral palsy, and other serious conditions who depend on electricity to survive.
"Even I don't know where I found the strength to keep believing and investing in human improvement, when 17 days ago, everything was a painful and dark nightmare," she confessed.
Her post concludes with a phrase that encapsulates the outrage of thousands of Cubans caught between criminal violence and the inaction of the State: “May being brave not come at such a high price!”
