The south of Florida is experiencing a heat wave this weekend with maximum temperatures nearing record levels in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, according to the NEXT Weather team from CBS4.

Miami reached a forecasted high temperature of 92°F (33.3°C) on Saturday, just 1°F below the historical record of 93°F set on May 2, 1937, while Fort Lauderdale hit 91°F, only two degrees shy of the 93°F record established in 2002.

The heat index temperatures across the metropolitan area were in the high range of 90°F, with the possibility of reaching 100°F in Miami between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Even in the Florida Keys, the heat index ranged between 90 and 95°F over the weekend.

West Palm Beach recorded a heat index of 101°F on Saturday, marking the first triple-digit feel temperature of the year for the entire region.

Weekend temperatures were between four and eight degrees Fahrenheit above historical averages for this time of year, driven by southwest winds from a high-pressure system over the Atlantic and a stationary front in the Gulf of Mexico.

This episode adds to a trend of recurring extreme heat in the region. In May 2024, Miami recorded the hottest May in its history, with a heat index of 112°F on the 18th of that month, breaking the previous daily record by 11°F.

That same month, Fort Lauderdale reached 98°F on May 13, 2024, the hottest day in 15 years for that city.

In July 2025, an extreme heat wave continued to affect Florida with heat indices reaching up to 105°F in the southern part of the state.

The excessive heat advisories in Miami-Dade and Broward are activated when the heat index exceeds 105°F for at least two consecutive hours, a threshold that was not reached in this episode.

The heat this weekend, however, will be short-lived: a cold front arrived today in South Florida, bringing the threat of rain, storms, and flash floods.

After the front passes, temperatures will drop even below the usual for this time of year, with forecasts for the next seven days indicating a chance of rain until Tuesday, before the weather clears and thermometers rise back to the mid-80s°F.
