A young Cuban is hospitalized in a southern Florida hospital after suffering serious injuries in a hit-and-run traffic accident that occurred in Miami last Wednesday, April 22, around midnight.

The victim, identified as Asiel Escobar, is from Centro Habana.

The impact occurred at the intersection of Flagler Street and 37th Avenue, on the western edge of Little Havana, an area with high commercial and cultural traffic that is strongly influenced by the Cuban and Hispanic community.

According to journalist Daniel Benítez, who reported the case on Facebook, Asiel was leaving his shift at a restaurant in the Brickell area and was heading home when the collision occurred.

The responsible driver fled the scene without providing assistance or notifying the authorities, which makes the case a hit-and-run offense.

Escobar remains in critical condition under medical observation, without any official updates on his progress being released so far.

The Miami Police have requested public assistance in identifying the driver and the vehicle involved, while reviewing security cameras installed in the area as part of the active investigation.

The incident occurs in a context of growing concern over road safety in Miami-Dade, a county that leads the number of traffic accidents in Florida and where hit-and-run incidents have repeatedly affected the Cuban community.

In the first few months of 2026, there were 93 accidents and 117 victims reported in the county, according to available data, and pedestrian accidents in Miami-Dade increased by more than 50% between 2020 and 2024.

Among the most notable cases that have affected the Cuban community is that of Alexis Muñoz, 46 years old, fatally struck in Little Havana in November 2024 by a driver who also fled the scene.

In August 2025, Enrique De Moya, 69 years old, was killed by a hit-and-run driver in northwest Miami-Dade who fled in a gray Toyota Tundra, a case in which authorities offered up to $5,000 as a reward for information.

In March 2026, the justice system issued a 18-year prison sentence against Víctor Rubio for the fatal hit-and-run of Cuban Tomás Brito in Little Havana, a case in which the driver had falsely reported his vehicle stolen to cover up his responsibility.

The investigation into the Escobar accident remains open, and the Miami police are awaiting witnesses or individuals with information about the vehicle involved to contact the authorities as soon as possible.
