The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) recorded a jump of 30 Cuban pesos in the informal market this Thursday, moving from 400 CUP on Wednesday to 430 CUP, according to data from elTOQUE.
The movement contrasts with the stability of the dollar and the euro, which opened unchanged and remain at their historic highs: 540 CUP and 618 CUP respectively.
The rebound of the MLC is striking because the day before, this digital currency had dropped 20 pesos to 400 CUP, while the dollar and the euro were solidifying their historical highs.

So far in May, the MLC has fluctuated between 400 and 430 CUP, after having reached a recent low of 385 CUP on April 14, a day when the dollar price was rising and the MLC was falling in the opposite direction.
This volatility is a structural characteristic of the MLC, a digital instrument created by the Cuban regime in 2019 to attract foreign currency.
Unlike the dollar and the euro, it lacks a transparent official exchange rate against the Cuban peso, making it particularly sensitive to rumors and fluctuations in supply and demand.
The dollar, on the other hand, has seen a sustained rise: opened January at 435 CUP and has risen by more than 100 pesos in four months. The euro surpassed 600 CUP for the first time on April 19 and has been setting records ever since.
