The U.S. dollar is trading this January 1, 2026, in the Cuban informal market, at 435 Cuban pesos (CUP), according to the independent media elTOQUE.

The US dollar, regarded as the primary safe haven for Cubans, continues to experience strong demand amid the lack of economic stability and cash shortages in banks.

The euro reaches 480 CUP today, solidifying its position as the most expensive currency in the parallel market. Its circulation is lower than that of the dollar, but many Cubans prefer it for travel and international transactions, especially those who receive remittances from Europe.

For its part, the MLC (freely convertible currency) remains at 400 CUP. Despite its recent decline, it still serves as a middle ground for those shopping in state stores or digital platforms.
