A young Cuban identified as Ray Obón Séne starred in an emotional reunion with his mother in Cuba this Sunday, surprising her on Mother's Day after four years of separation.
Ray posted the reunion video on TikTok last Thursday, days before the celebration, and in it, he left a phrase that captures the weight of distance: "My mom didn't believe that after 4 years I was going to hug her again."
The 20-second clip captures the moment of the hug and features the voice of a young man addressing a boy named Raiden at the beginning of the recording.
The reunion of Ray adds to a trend that repeats every Mother's Day among the Cuban diaspora. Last year, Cuban @jorgitin90 surprised everyone by returning to the island to embrace his mother on the same date, with a video that also touched thousands of followers.
In May 2025, another Cuban surprised his mother after four years of separation, sparking the viral comment "That's not done" among users of the platform.
In February of this year, William Pérez surprised his mother after nearly four years in a similarly emotional reunion, and just last week Anly Meireles appeared unannounced at her mother's house in Cuba, who reacted with a mix of disbelief and joy.
These reunions reflect a reality that defines Mother's Day 2026 in Cuba: thousands of families separated by the massive emigration that has emptied the island in recent years.
Since 2021, more than a million Cubans have left the country, and Cuba's population dropped from 11 million in 2020 to less than 9.75 million by the end of 2024, according to data from the National Office of Statistics and Information.
38% of Cuban households have at least one emigrated member, making dates like this a bittersweet reminder: many mothers on the island celebrated on Sunday through a video call, while others, like Ray's mother, received an unexpected surprise.
Anly Meireles summarized it when sharing her own reunion: "No one can imagine the weight we carry when the people we love the most are far away."
