Ramón Lauzurique-González, a 55-year-old Cuban citizen, was arrested on Wednesday in Miami after shooting his roommate during a violent argument fueled by jealousy, according to Local 10, which obtained the arrest report from the Miami Police Department.

The incident occurred around 5:05 p.m. in an apartment on the 3400 block of Southwest 10th Street, an address that corresponds to the Little Havana neighborhood, although the police report places it in Coral Gables.

Lauzurique-González faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm or deadly weapon, a first-degree felony in Florida that carries a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

According to the investigations, the victim had been living in the apartment for about three months with his wife, Lauzurique-González, and his ex-wife, who turns out to be the sister of the victim's wife.

On the day of the shooting, the suspect had argued with his ex-wife and accused her of divorcing him because she felt "attracted to the victim."

Before returning to the apartment, the ex-wife told investigators that Lauzurique-González left saying in Spanish, "I’m going to solve a problem."

He returned through a different entrance, armed with a black gun, pointed it at the victim and shouted, "Today I'm going to kill you" before opening fire, according to a witness's statement to detectives.

The victim was shot in the right shoulder and was struck in the head with the weapon while trying to disarm him.

Despite the injuries, he managed to struggle with the attacker, wrest the pistol away from him, and escape from the apartment.

The police recovered the weapon near the main entrance and located the suspect shortly after near the intersection of Southwest 34th Avenue and Southwest 7th Street.

Before being arrested, Lauzurique-González made a spontaneous statement in Spanish to the officer who apprehended him, the content of which was redacted from the public report.

After being informed of his constitutional rights, he also confessed something to the detectives; that confession was also omitted from the published report.

The victim and two witnesses identified the suspect in separate photographic lineups.

This type of domestic violence case in the Cuban community of Miami has had previous episodes, such as the arrest of a man accused of killing his wife and stepson last April, or the case of a Cuban detained for domestic violence who died in the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this month.

Under Florida's "10-20-Life" law, the fact of having fired a weapon carries a mandatory minimum of 20 years in prison, regardless of the maximum penalty applicable to the charge.

Until this Thursday, Lauzurique-González remained detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County, with bail "to be determined" while awaiting his first appearance before the judge.
