The president of the VOX party, Santiago Abascal, received the historic Cuban opposition figure José Daniel Ferrer this Thursday in Madrid and conveyed the "firm support" of his party to work towards the end of the Cuban regime, as Abascal himself published on Facebook.

The meeting is part of Ferrer's European tour, which has taken him to meet with high-level political leaders in Spain, including the leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and to appear before the European Parliament to denounce the situation on the Island.

During the meeting, Ferrer presented Abascal with the Agreement for Liberation, a document signed by the coalitions Assembly of the Cuban Resistance (ARC) and Steps for Change that outlines a roadmap for democratic transition in Cuba, as reported by La Gaceta.

Abascal described Ferrer as a "Cuban political prisoner, signatory of the Madrid Charter, and one of the leading figures of the Cuban opposition," and stated his "full willingness to continue working for the end of the criminal Cuban regime of the Castro family and their executioners in every space where it is necessary."

The leader of VOX concluded his message with a strong statement: "Cuba is going to regain its freedom."

Ferrer, for his part, characterized the meeting as "very positive" and expressed his gratitude to Abascal for his commitment, describing him as "a great friend of the cause for the freedom of Cuba."

The Liberation Agreement, originally presented in Miami on March 2, 2026, proposes four stages—Liberation, Stabilization, Reconstruction, and Democratization—and includes the dismantling of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), the demilitarization of public life, and the calling of free elections.

The document states that its signatories are "united in the goal of ending the dictatorship in Cuba and dismantling the communist system, restoring civil leadership in all state affairs."

It also demands "the immediate release of all those imprisoned for political reasons" and the restoration of freedoms of expression, press, association, and religion.

Ferrer’s European tour, organized alongside Prisoners Defenders, began on May 2 in Madrid and will span over 10 countries for about a month.

On May 5, he appeared before the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee in Brussels, where he described the Cuban crisis as "the worst crisis in modern history" of the Island and called for Magnitsky sanctions against regime officials.

On May 11, from Warsaw, Ferrer stated that the Cuban regime "will not survive this year", and revealed that sectors of the U.S. administration close to Secretary of State Marco Rubio have privately discussed the possibility of a military intervention in Cuba.

Ferrer also harshly criticized the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and Cuba, describing it as a "serious mistake" that only serves to "breathe life into the regime."

In that same vein, VOX MEPs Hermann Tertsch and Jorge Martín Frías called for the immediate suspension of the agreement during the Plenary in Strasbourg, denouncing that the European institutions act as "direct accomplices" of the regime.

Ferrer left Cuba for exile in Miami on October 13, 2025 after being imprisoned in July 2021 following the July 11 protests, and having endured torture and extreme isolation in the Mar Verde prison.

In an interview given during his stay in Spain, he issued a direct warning: "Spain is going to lose Cuba for the second time."
