The Cuban opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer García stated in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Independiente that the “end of the Castro-communist regime” in Cuba is near and suggested that the United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will play a crucial role in that process.

Ferrer, leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU) and currently exiled in Miami after leaving the island in October 2025, declared from Warsaw that the Cuban regime “will not survive this year” and stated that he hopes for an outcome before the midterm elections in the United States.

“Without a doubt, we are very close to the end of the Castro-communist regime,” declared the opposition figure in statements published by El Independiente this Sunday.

During the interview, Ferrer stated that the internal opposition in Cuba has been practically dismantled following the protests of July 11, 2021, due to heavy state repression, imprisonment sentences, and the forced exile of numerous activists.

The dissident also praised Rubio's influence on Washington's policy towards Cuba and asserted that the Secretary of State has a “commitment to freedom in Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua.”

In a passage that resonates with the prevailing sentiment among Cubans, according to the recent public opinion survey released by independent media,  Ferrer defended the need for a decisive action from the United States against the Cuban regime and compared the potential scenario on the island with what recently occurred in Venezuela following the fall of Nicolás Maduro.

Furthermore, he strongly criticized the European Union's policy towards Havana and specifically held the Spanish Government responsible for maintaining the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement with Cuba.

If Europe continues to turn its back on us, Cuba will end up erecting altars to Donald Trump. And Spain will be responsible, said Ferrer to the Spanish newspaper.

The opposition figure believed that Brussels should toughen its stance against the Cuban regime and impose sanctions similar to those applied against Nicaragua or Venezuela.

Ferrer also recounted the abuses he suffered during his last imprisonment in Cuba. According to what he told the mentioned outlet, he was a victim of beatings, threats, and forced feeding while he was detained after being arrested again in 2025.

The activist stated that, despite currently living in Miami, his intention is to return to Cuba once there is a political change on the island.
