The informal foreign exchange market in Cuba set new records again this Saturday, with a new increase of the US dollar, which opened at 558 CUP, three pesos more than on Friday, when it had already reached a historical high of 555 CUP.
The rise of the American dollar confirms the increasing pressure on the Cuban peso amid inflation, shortages, and a lack of confidence in the state economy.
The euro also increased in price and is currently trading at 635 CUP, its record value, reached on May 20. On Friday, it was at 630 CUP, experienced a slight drop in the Cuban black market, but has returned to its peak.
The European currency continues to show a sustained upward trend, driven by strong demand in the informal market and the need for many Cubans to protect their savings against the constant depreciation of the CUP.
Exchange Rate Evolution
Meanwhile, the MLC also saw an increase, reaching 412 CUP, after closing on Friday at 400 CUP. The rise of 12 pesos in just 24 hours reflects the growing economic uncertainty and the high demand for foreign currency in Cuba.
