A video posted last Sunday on TikTok by the user @irisaidyscandelar shows the emotional surprise reunion of a Cuban who traveled from Miami to the island after four years of separation, and the heartbreaking scream she let out when she arrived in front of her parents' building says it all.
The clip amassed tens of thousands of reactions in just a few days and triggered an avalanche of comments from Cubans who immediately identified with the scene.
"That cry made my throat tighten, congratulations, another soul healed," wrote one of the users.
Another comment summed up what many feel: "Only a Cuban knows that when they leave, they don’t know when they'll return or if they'll see loved ones again. It’s sad despite that joy."
"Only those of us who have emigrated know that pain," added another follower, while a third simply wrote: "Oh my God, for God's sake, how long will this distance continue to exist?"
The video joins a wave of surprise reunions that have become a trend on TikTok in recent weeks, particularly around Mother's Day.
The comments on the video from @irisaidyscandelar also included personal stories. One user recounted that in 2006, after seven years away without notice, he went up to the fourth floor where his mother lived: "She was ironing with the door open. I stared at her for about three minutes, and when she saw me... Luckily there was a couch behind me. I almost lost it from the emotion."
