A Cuban from the diaspora visited her 105-year-old great-grandmother in Cuba and shared the emotional reunion in a video posted on TikTok on May 14, where the elderly woman displays a sharpness and humor that moved thousands of users.
The author of the clip, identified as DayiAshley (@dayanisashley97), accompanied the images with the text: "At 105 years old!!! My great-grandmother is still witty and caring for us as always."
In the 53-second video, the great-grandmother is seen sitting on the edge of a bed, dressed in a brightly colored floral robe, with white, curly hair, in a simple room with pink sheets, a small blue fan on the bedside table, and a container of food beside her.
Far from seeming indifferent to the visit, the elderly woman takes the initiative and asks her relatives if they are well and if they have anything to eat: "Are you all okay? Right? Does anyone want food? If not, I want food," the woman is heard saying with complete clarity of mind.
DayiAshley herself captured the sentiment of the post in her description: "How nice it is to have an old lady like this in the family."
The reunion is part of a growing trend among Cubans living abroad, who document their visits to elderly relatives on social media, eliciting an intense emotional response within the diaspora community.
In February of this year, another viral video featured a Cuban woman who is 105 years old reuniting with her 95-year-old brother, and in July 2025, a 104-year-old Cuban grandmother celebrated her birthday with mariachis, cake, and beer in a video that also went viral on social media.
Cuba is one of the most aged countries in Latin America, with over 3,000 centenarians registered in 2024, 82.6% of whom are women, according to data from Prensa Latina.
A study conducted between 2005 and 2018 identified 1,488 centenarians on the island, which is equivalent to 13.24 per 100,000 inhabitants, with a higher concentration in the eastern provinces of Las Tunas, Granma, and Santiago de Cuba.
Life expectancy in Cuba is around 79 years, although the massive emigration of young people and low fertility rates have accelerated demographic aging, putting pressure on the island's health and social protection systems.
DayiAshley's great-grandmother, with her intact sense of humor and genuine concern for her family, becomes a symbol of that Cuban longevity that, despite hardships, continues to astonish both locals and outsiders.
