The Cuban Davisleydi Velazco triumphed this Sunday at the International Athletics Meeting in Forbach, France, with a jump of 14.83 meters, earning her the title of champion in the women's triple jump event.
Velazco, who left the island's federation behind, emigrated to the United States and currently resides in Puerto Rico, practically secured victory from her first attempt, a mark that none of her rivals managed to surpass during the rest of the competition.
The French athlete Ilionis Guillaume finished second with a distance of 14.09 meters, while the German Kira Wittmann secured the podium in third place with 13.89 meters, according to the website Cuba camino a Los Ángeles 2028.
The result confirms the excellent form the athlete is experiencing in the 2026 season. Just a few days earlier, Velazco had set a new personal best of 14.85 meters in a competition held in Puerto Rico, surpassing her previous best of 14.72 meters achieved in August 2025 at the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels.
That mark of 14.85 m places her third in the world list for the season and sixth in the women's triple jump world ranking according to World Athletics.
The Cuban athlete has maintained a rising performance trend that places her among the most consistent triple jumpers on the international circuit this year.
In the men's triple jump event, the Cuban Christian Nápoles also participated, who finished seventh with a distance of 15.90 meters, below his season best of 2026, which is 16.08 meters.
On the other hand, the Cuban middle-distance runner Daily Cooper was listed among those registered to compete in the 800 meters, but ultimately did not start as she continued recovering from a severe flu she contracted the previous weekend.
Cooper is expected to return to competitive activity in the upcoming events of his European tour.
Velazco, born in Cuba on September 4, 1999, has in her achievements the NACAC Under-23 title, the Pan American Under-20 championship, and the bronze medal at the 2018 Under-20 World Cup. She also participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the 2022 World Athletics Championships.
The victory in Forbach represents a new indication of Velazco's athletic growth in a season that could become the best of his competitive career.
