A 32-year-old woman, a neighbor of Reinosa and of Cuban origin, passed away this morning after falling from the third floor of a house located on Mayor Street, in the center of that Cantabrian town.
The alert to the Emergency Service 112 was received around 6:30 AM, according to a post on X, and local police, firefighters from the Government of Cantabria, the Civil Guard, and medical services from 061 were dispatched to the scene.
Paramedics performed resuscitation maneuvers on the victim at the scene of the incident, but it was not possible to save their life, and they certified the death right there.
According to the local media El Diario Montañés, eyewitnesses reported that the young woman fell from the window of a three-story building and that, although the awning of the establishment on the ground floor partially cushioned her fall, the impact with the ground was fatal.
The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
Although the woman was accompanied in the room at the time she fell, initial indications rule out signs of violence or criminal activity and suggest that it was an accidental incident.
Police sources consulted by El Diario Montañés also rule out the possibility of a voluntary death, although the investigation remains open.
The young woman had no prior record in the VioGén system— Spain's police mechanism for monitoring cases of gender violence—however, protocol dictated that her registration in that database be activated since she was a woman who died in the presence of another person.
The body was placed under the custody of the Judicial Police and forensic teams.
The event caused a profound shock in Reinosa, a small city with about 8,700 inhabitants and the capital of the Campoo-Los Valles region.
The mayor, Sergio Balbontín, expressed the impact that the tragedy has had on the neighborhood: "We woke up to this very sad and unfortunate news that has caused great consternation among the residents. Some early risers who passed through the area found this poor girl and the response from emergency services."
Regarding the investigation, the councilor indicated that the case is in the hands of the Judicial Police and that everything points to an accident: "As a protocol, the case has been activated in the Viogén database, but there was no prior information about the victim."
The Civil Guard's investigation is still ongoing, and the authorities are awaiting the results of the forensic analysis to accurately determine the causes of death.
