The Nassau police in the Bahamas launched an investigation on Thursday regarding an alleged physical and sexual assault against a 26-year-old Cuban woman in the Bozine Town area of the capital of the archipelago.
According to the preliminary report from the authorities, published in the media Eyewitness News Bahamas, shortly before 2:00 a.m., officers received reports of a naked woman running into a yard seeking help.
Once at the location, the officers determined that the woman had been brought to the area by an unknown man, who allegedly physically and sexually assaulted her and stole all her personal belongings.
Among the stolen items were her handbag, cash, cell phone, and passport, as confirmed by Eyewitness News Bahamas.
Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene and transported the victim to the hospital for medical attention. Their health status is unknown at the time of publication.
So far, no arrests have been reported in connection with the case.
The theft of the passport particularly worsens the victim's situation, as without that document, their immigration status and legal standing in the Bahamas become even more vulnerable.
The Bahamas is a common transit point for Cubans attempting to reach the United States by sea. Migrants in irregular situations face conditions of extreme vulnerability: they lack documentation, fear deportation, and have limited access to support networks and protection services.
In 2026, at least 43 Cubans were repatriated from the Bahamas to Cuba as part of a group of 861 migrants returned by the United States, Mexico, and the archipelago itself.
The security climate in Nassau is also concerning. In April 2025, the United States Embassy in the Bahamas issued a specific alert regarding sexual assaults against women in Nassau, reporting two cases in the previous month and three in 2024. In 2023, incidents of this nature increased by 11% compared to the previous year, according to Bahamian police statistics.
In that context, another Cuban had been implicated in a case of alleged sexual assault in the archipelago in April 2025, which indicates that the Cuban community in the Bahamas is present both among victims and those being investigated in such incidents.
The Bahamian police have requested citizen collaboration to obtain information that will assist with the investigation. Those with relevant information can contact 911, 919, the nearest police station, or the Criminal Investigation Department. Anonymous reports can also be made through Crime Stoppers at 328-TIPS (8477).
