The family of Melanie Lauren Hyer, the 46-year-old real estate agent found dead along with her two daughters in their Doral home on Tuesday, broke the silence to clarify key details about the tragedy and profile the man responsible: Ryan Charles Whiten, 42, the biological father of the girls.

The shock that shook Miami-Dade since the news broke has deepened with each new detail revealed by relatives, authorities, and Whiten's ex-wife, who spoke from Venezuela.

What the authorities confirmed

On Tuesday, at 7:32 PM, agents responded to a welfare check call in the gated community of Doral Isles.

Upon entering the residence, they found the four individuals deceased, all with stab wounds.

On Thursday, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office issued an official statement: “The investigation revealed that Mr. Whiten committed these heinous acts and then took his own life,” confirming that it was a case of murder-suicide.

Melanie's family clarifies the story

The mother of Hyer, Jill Hyer; her sister Corry Hyer, and her ex-husband Alvin Jaramillo issued a joint statement clarifying that Hyer and Whiten were never married, that she had full custody of the girls, and that Whiten "had a history of drug abuse."

"Ryan Whiten's actions have shattered our family in ways that words cannot express," they wrote.

"Melanie was a woman of extraordinary warmth and fierce devotion to her daughters. Savannah and Sienna were joyful, bright, and beloved girls who had their whole lives ahead of them. The loss of all three—violently, without warning—is a wound that will never heal," the statement adds.

Whiten's ex-wife speaks from Venezuela

Hilda Zerpa, ex-wife of Ryan Whiten, spoke from Venezuela and described the relationship between Whiten and Hyer as characterized by constant tension.

“It was always a turbulent relationship,” declared Zerpa, who recounted that Whiten would ask him to accompany him to pick up his daughters because he didn’t want to go alone, and that he would receive messages from Hyer sent through the girls themselves.

The family psychologist Christina Ballinotti, consulted by NBC6, explained that the use of a knife "points to a form of aggression that is particularly intimate and direct."

Who were Melanie, Savannah, and Sienna?

Originally from New York, Melanie Hyer has sold over 1,000 properties in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.

Her colleague Kim Rodstein described her to the Miami Herald as "brilliant" and with "a truly extraordinary business mind."

Savannah and Sienna attended Downtown Doral Charter School and were active members of the Doral Field Hockey Club.

The principal of the school, Jeannette Acevedo-Isenberg, stated: "Our community is in mourning for the loss of two of our beloved students. These young women will be deeply missed."

Friends from Savannah described her as someone who "never stopped smiling and was always happy."

The mayor of Doral, Christi Fraga, who personally knew Hyer and her daughters, urged the community to prevent similar cases.

"This tragedy is also a painful reminder that we must continue to have honest conversations about mental health, domestic violence, emotional well-being, and the importance of speaking up when something is wrong," he stated.
