The dollar reached a new historical record in the Cuban informal market this Sunday, trading at 620 Cuban pesos (CUP), five pesos more than on Saturday, according to the monitoring by elTOQUE.

The euro also rises by five pesos and is now at 705 CUP, surpassing the barrier of 700 pesos reached in the previous trading session.

The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), the digital currency used by the Cuban regime in some stores, is the only one that remains unchanged today: it stays at 450 CUP, the record it reached on the previous day after a jump of 45 pesos in just one day.

The rise of the dollar and the euro in recent weeks has been significant and confirms the crisis of the Cuban peso and the national economy.

In just over a month, the Cuban peso has lost approximately 12% of its value against the dollar, while the gap with the official exchange rate continues to widen.

The rise in currency prices negatively affects the purchasing power of the population, as the Cuban peso devalues against foreign currencies, increasing the cost of living, particularly for those who depend on remittances or need to import products from abroad.

The dollar has set four consecutive records at the beginning of June, in a trend that shows no signs of slowing down. The accumulated inflation between 2024 and 2026 exceeds 200%, and the scarcity of foreign currency, the decline in tourism, and the energy crisis continue to exert pressure on the Cuban peso.

Meanwhile, the monthly cost of the basic basket for two people in Havana exceeds 41,000 CUP, more than five times the average salary, according to data collected in the daily currency monitoring in Cuba.

The currency crisis is part of a broader structural deterioration: an accumulated inflation rate exceeding 200% between 2024 and 2026, a chronic shortage of foreign currency, a persistent energy crisis, and tourism that fell from 4.7 million visitors in 2018 to 1.8 million in 2025, depriving the country of one of its main sources of foreign currency.

The economist Elías Amor warned on Friday that if the deterioration continues, the dollar could reach 1,000 Cuban pesos, a figure that would have seemed unimaginable just a few months ago.
