"Everything is sold out until August" but without transport: the summer of Campismo Popular in Cuba

Popular camping in Holguín and Matanzas has fully booked reservations for the summer of 2026, but both provinces admit they cannot guarantee transportation due to the fuel crisis.

The facilities of Campismo Popular in Holguín and Matanzas are fully booked for the summer of 2026, but both provinces face a common limitation that the regime itself acknowledges: the lack of transportation due to the fuel deficit that is paralyzing the country.

In Holguín, sales for reservations for July and August began on May 9, and the result is that practically everything is sold out.

"All our facilities have been sold, above all, Playa Blanca is one hundred percent sold out for July and August. Los Bajos is also sold, and the Vaquero, which has a smaller capacity, is sold as well," stated an executive of the entity during the television program Primer Plano on Holguin television.

The only exception is the Silla de Gibara, which will not offer pool service this summer, although its restaurants, bar, café, and hiking trail will remain open.

For those who were unable to make a reservation, the leader offered an alternative: "We also have available for every facility the option for any free customer who wants to access them. That is a good option."

However, the shadow of transportation looms over the summer plans. "There are limitations regarding transportation. We have a contract with TCP for day trip transportation, which is what we can actually offer," the official admitted, meaning that transfers to the facilities are limited to that one option.

In Matanzas, the situation is similar. The Provincial Camping Company announced it is ready for the summer with six operational facilities: Bacunayagua, Canímar Abajo, Faro de Maya, San Juan, the nautical base, and La Arboleda, the latter offering water bikes and horseback riding.

The program includes nautical activities, dominoes, raffles, nighttime parties with karaoke, and classic children's games, with options for day passes or reservation cycles from Monday to Thursday and from Thursday to Monday during June, July, and August.

But José Ángel Yanyac Castillo, the commercial specialist of the entity, acknowledged the same shortcoming as in Holguín: Matanzas has no transportation services due to the fuel shortage that the country is experiencing.

The transport crisis is not an isolated problem for these two provinces. The newspaper Trabajadores acknowledged last Thursday that in popular camping "it is impossible to guarantee transportation" even though "there are still capacities" available.

This situation is part of a structural fuel crisis that intensified since January 9, 2026, when Cuba stopped receiving imported oil regularly. On May 16, the Ministry of Transportation announced progressive reductions in National Buses, trains, and maritime routes starting from June 18, just as the high season for camping begins.

Despite everything, the regime maintains Campismo Popular as a symbol of social policy. Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz presided over the event on May 20 to mark the 45th anniversary of the network in Los Cocos, Mayabeque, assuring that the program would be available "to welcome children, young people, and Cuban families this summer," while the national network of 98 facilities with over 18,000 capacities faces a summer without guarantees of reaching its destination.
