Marieta Pérez Alfaro, mother of the comedian Eduardo Ceballos Pérez —creator of the channel 'Despingovery Channel'—, publicly reported that the family has been unable to see the young man for a week since his arrest on June 1 in Havana.
«Today marks a week since my son's arrest, these are the hours that prevent us from seeing him,» stated the mother in a video shared by independent journalist Ernesto Morales.
According to Pérez Alfaro, the digital content creator was transferred to Combinado del Este last Friday, and on Saturday he made his mandatory phone call from that prison, the main facility in Havana.
However, no family member has been able to visit him or provide him with basic hygiene items, despite the fact that the family’s lawyer explained that they legally have the right to see him within a period of up to three days after his transfer, a deadline that has already been exceeded.
The mother described what happened when the family visited the prison yesterday: "We were somewhat brushed off, a bit ignored, we were extremely upset, we were at the end of our rope."
Finally, as he explained, the authorities of Combinado del Este granted them permission to visit Eduardo this Tuesday.
"We feel overwhelmed, we feel frustrated because we still have no information about what is happening with him," the mother added, who promised to post a new video after the visit.
A relative who preferred to remain anonymous summarized the distress of his family: “The instructor told us that he will be processed, but we still cannot see him. We haven’t even been able to help him with personal hygiene. We don’t really know how he is doing.”
Ceballos was arrested during a large police operation near his home in the Diez de Octubre municipality, without the agents allowing him to enter his house or to notify his wife.
The trigger was a post on Instagram featuring a clip in which it explored an abandoned military facility with Soviet missiles from the 1960s, radars, and Cold War bunkers, content that became politically explosive given the context of pressure from the United States on the Cuban regime.
The authorities informed the family that he would be charged with "invasion of military property," but the lawyer Alain Santana from Cubalex warned that this charge does not exist in any Cuban penal code: "Accusing and depriving a citizen of their freedom based on a non-existent criminal figure constitutes a blatant violation of the principle of legality."
An anonymous source cited by Martí Noticias indicated that Ceballos could face a military tribunal on the charge of "revealing secrets concerning State Security," with penalties ranging from four to ten years of imprisonment.
Ceballos himself had anticipated his arrest weeks before, recording a precautionary video in which he stated: "If you are watching this video, it unfortunately means that I have been imprisoned, separated from my home, my family, my daughter, once again showing the true nature of the government of Cuba."
The mother concluded her message with a commitment: "Tomorrow, I promise that when we return from there, we will make another video to keep everyone informed about what is happening with my son."
