Playing in a World Cup is a privilege. Competing in two is already an achievement reserved for a select few. However, maintaining presence for four, five, or even six editions demands something much more challenging: talent, discipline, consistency, and the ability to reinvent oneself in the face of the passage of time. With the featuring 48 teams and 12 groups, it's the perfect time to look back at the players who have made the World Cup their second home.

Lionel Messi tops the historical ranking of World Cup matches with 26 appearances, a record achieved in Qatar 2022, where Argentina claimed the title against France and the Argentine star delivered the performance of his life.

In that tournament, Messi not only surpassed Lothar Matthäus' historical record, but also became the first player capable of scoring in the group stage, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final of the same edition, "a demonstration of influence rarely seen in the history of the competition."

Just behind is Lothar Matthäus, a symbol of German consistency, with 25 matches played in five consecutive World Cups from 1982 to 1998. The midfielder led West Germany to the title in Italy 1990, and "his record of matches seemed destined to remain unbroken forever."

The podium is completed by Miroslav Klose with 24 matches, although his most enduring legacy is another: the all-time leading scorer in World Cups with 16 goals across four editions (2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014). His record was sealed in Brazil 2014 when he surpassed Ronaldo Nazário's 15 goals, and that same year he helped Germany secure their fourth star.

In fourth place is Paolo Maldini with 23 World Cup matches. Regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time, the Italian held the record for most minutes played in the tournament for years, although he never managed to lift the trophy.

Cristiano Ronaldo ranks fifth with 22 matches and wrote his own historic page by becoming the first footballer to score in five different World Cups: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022, accumulating a total of seven goals. "Although the world title continues to be the major missing achievement in his career, few players have managed to remain at the elite level for as long as he has."

Further down the ranking are Diego Armando Maradona and Władysław Żmuda, both with 21 matches. Maradona delivered one of the most extraordinary individual performances in history during Mexico 1986: five goals, five assists, and direct involvement in 10 of Argentina's 14 goals, including "The Hand of God" and "The Goal of the Century" against England in the quarter-finals.

Cafú closes the group of the eight most enduring players with 20 matches. The list is completed with figures such as Uwe Seeler —the first footballer to score in four different World Cups, before Ronaldo and Messi—, Javier Mascherano, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Hugo Lloris, and Grzegorz Lato.

All of them, from different eras, styles, and nationalities, share a common characteristic: they made the World Cup a tradition. With Messi (Argentina, Group J) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, Group K) participating in the 2026 tournament, both have the opportunity to further enhance their historical records in what is likely to be their last World Cup appearance.

"Playing in many World Cups speaks to longevity. But leaving a mark in them is what separates great footballers from true legends."
