The Colombian actor and presenter Aco Pérez (Heráldico Pérez Villamizar) posted a video on Instagram from Havana in which he documents the humanitarian crisis facing Cuba and delivers a direct message to his fellow countrymen just days before the presidential runoff.
"One thing is to hear about the situation in a country, and another very different thing is to be here and see it with your own eyes," Aco said in a video where he explores the heart of the Cuban capital.
The reel shows gas stations without fuel, people searching for food in the dumpsters of the city's most central streets, and confirms that there are 24-hour power outages on the island.
The actor was emphatic in his assessment: "This is a political model that has definitely failed."
In the video, he included comments from some Cubans, and one of them noted, "Capitalism is safer for me than socialism."
Aco Pérez, whose real name is Heráldico Pérez Villamizar, is known in Colombia for his roles in soap operas such as Rafael Orozco, el ídolo and Diomedes, el cacique de la Junta, and for his digital travel and interview format El Mundo de Aco. He has also been publicly identified as a political advisor.
The video was published six days before the second round of the Colombian presidential elections, scheduled for June 21.
In the description of the reel, the actor clarified his intention: "This video is not a criticism of the Cuban people, but a reflection on the consequences of an economic model. I came to show what I saw, so that everyone can draw their own conclusions before choosing a president next Sunday in Colombia."
