Group E of the 2026 World Cup: how it stands after the second matchday and what is at stake in the final one

Germany and Ivory Coast are already in the Round of 32 in Group E of the 2026 World Cup. Ecuador needs to defeat Germany and hope for a loss by Ivory Coast against Curacao to contend for second place.

Germany has already secured its ticket to the Round of 16, and so has Ivory Coast, but Group E of the 2026 World Cup reaches its final matchday with a spot for the best third-place team up for grabs, along with a battle for position between the two qualified teams.

This is the and this is what each team will be playing for on Thursday, June 25.

How we got here

The first matchday set the tone from the very first whistle. Germany crushed Curacao 7-1 in Houston with goals from Nmecha, Schlotterbeck, Havertz (two goals), Musiala, Brow, and Undav.

The only Caribbean goal, scored by Livano Comenencia, was historic: the first goal for Curacao in a World Cup. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1-0 in Philadelphia with a goal from Amad Diallo in the 90th minute, leaving La Tri with no points and a negative goal difference from the start.

The second matchday added drama. In Toronto, Ivory Coast took the lead thanks to Franck Kessié in the 30th minute, but Germany responded: Nadiem Amiri equalized in the 68th minute, and Deniz Undav —who had already scored in matchday 1— completed the comeback in stoppage time for a final score of 2-1.

A fact for the history books: Manuel Neuer reached 21 matches in World Cups, an absolute record for a goalkeeper. In Kansas City, Ecuador and Curacao shared a point with a 0-0 draw that felt unsatisfactory for both.

Germany leads with authority: six points and a goal difference of +7 that reflects their absolute dominance. Ivory Coast is in second place with three points and a neutral goal difference. Ecuador and Curaçao share one point, but they are separated by a chasm in goal difference (-1 versus -6). Curaçao is mathematically eliminated.

The scenarios for matchday 3

On Thursday, June 25, both matches kick off simultaneously at 4:00 PM Cuba time (8:00 PM UTC): Curaçao vs. Ivory Coast at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, and Ecuador vs. Germany at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey. Simultaneity is FIFA's standard format to prevent collusion.

Germany arrives without pressure: already qualified, they are only deciding whether to finish in first or second place. A victory against Ecuador ensures the top spot; a setback could hand the first position to Côte d'Ivoire if the Ivorians win against Curaçao.

Ivory Coast is also in the mix, but it wants the top spot. If it beats Curacao and Germany does not win, it finishes in first place. If it loses, it could drop to second place without any major consequences for its direct qualification.

Ecuador is the team with the most at stake. With one point and a goal difference of -1, they need to win against Germany to reach four points. If they succeed and Ivory Coast loses to Curaçao, La Tri could climb to second place. Even with four points and not reaching second place, their position as one of the best third-placed teams would almost be assured, as the eight best third-placed teams from the 12 groups of the tournament advance to the Round of 32. A draw or a loss would leave them with one or two points, depending on the outcomes among the third-placed teams in the other groups.

Curaçao can no longer qualify, but it can bid farewell to its historic debut in a World Cup with a victory over Côte d'Ivoire, which would, in turn, open the door for Ecuador.
