A Cuban woman who has been separated from her family for four years shared an emotional video of the family reunion recorded outside an airport, where her loved ones met her grandson for the first time, a moment she was unable to experience in person.

The author, identified as @marian.garcia_a, posted the video on May 18, 2026, accompanied by a description that summarizes the pain experienced by thousands of Cuban families fragmented by exile: joy for the reunion of others and sorrow for their own distance.

"I never imagined that the heart could feel so full and so empty at the same time. Today I am deeply happy because life has gifted you that beautiful moment of meeting your grandchild... but I also feel a sadness that grips the soul, because distance has stolen the joy of experiencing it by your side," he wrote.

In her message, the Cuban describes four years of waiting marked by dreams of returning and embraces that exist only in her memory: "It has been four years dreaming of coming back, of that embrace that has become eternal in my mind, of feeling them close again and not through memories or a screen."

The video includes the hashtag #i220a, which refers to the U.S. immigration document known as "Order of Release on Recognizance." This form allows Cubans to live freely while their case is pending before an immigration court, but it does not grant legal status or work authorization, and traveling to Cuba could jeopardize that process.

This type of post is part of a sustained viral trend on TikTok during 2025 and 2026, where Cuban families document their reunions at airports after years of separation. Among the most notable cases is that of a mother who welcomed her son at Frank País Airport in Holguín after four years apart, garnering over 42,400 views, and the case of two young cousins reunited at a Cuban airport which exceeded 50,400 views.

Also, a Cuban woman who arrived at the airport amidst cries when she couldn't find her father among the crowd moved thousands of users in June 2026. A Cuban who returned from Uruguay after three years shouting, "Mom!" gained over 407,100 views.

The Frank País de Holguín International Airport, with between 55 and 60 international flights weekly to Miami, Toronto, and other cities, has become one of the most filmed settings for these reunions.

Behind each video lies an unprecedented demographic crisis: between 2020 and 2024, Cuba lost more than 1.4 million residents, primarily due to emigration, reducing its population to less than 9.75 million. In 2022 alone, over 225,000 Cubans left the country, leaving behind grandparents who do not know their grandchildren and parents who do not see their children grow up.

"The distance hurts, and it hurts a lot, because when love is so great, the kilometers weigh twice as much," wrote @marian.garcia_a, summarizing in one sentence what millions of Cubans scattered around the world feel every day.
