Switzerland and Algeria will face off in the round of sixteen of the on Thursday, July 3, at the , in one of the knockout phase matches of the tournament.

This matchup is part of the Round of 32, a new phase in the history of the World Cup that debuts in this expanded edition featuring 48 teams. How Switzerland Arrived

The Swiss team concluded the group stage as leaders of Group B with seven points, achieved through two victories and one draw. They started by drawing against Qatar (1-1) on June 13, then defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 on June 18, and wrapped up the stage by defeating Canada 2-1 on June 24.

The balance of seven goals scored and three conceded (GD +4) reflects the solidity of the team coached by Murat Yakin.

Breel Embolo was the top Swiss scorer in the group stage with four goals, while captain Granit Xhaka — who is competing in his fourth consecutive World Cup with 144 international matches under his belt — contributed two goals from the penalty spot. In defense, Manuel Akanji was the defensive cornerstone that maintained the team's consistency throughout the three matches.

Their campaign was inconsistent but had moments of character. They lost 0-3 to Argentina in the opening match, won 2-1 against Jordan in the second match, and featured in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Austria on Friday, June 27, a match in which captain Riyad Mahrez scored two goals to keep the qualification hopes alive before Sasa Kalajdzic equalized in the 90th minute.

The coach Vladimir Petković has a squad with representation in top European clubs: Amine Gouiri (Olympique de Marseille), Rayan Aït-Nouri (Manchester City), Ismaël Bennacer (Dinamo Zagreb), and Ramy Bensebaini (Borussia Dortmund) are some of his most prominent players.

Algeria is competing in its fifth World Cup in history, following its participations in 1982, 1986, 2010, and 2014. There is no previous World Cup history between the two teams that is editorially relevant.

The winner of the match at BC Place will advance to the next stage of the knockout round, where the level of competition will only intensify.
