President Donald Trump posted this Sunday on his social media platform Truth Social that communism is the greatest threat to the United States since World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, or the September 11 attacks. The message, signed with his full name in capital letters, garnered over 15,400 "likes" and 4,140 retruths within a few hours.
The statement is part of a rhetorical offensive that Trump launched on two simultaneous fronts: an extensive message on Truth Social and a speech before the Faith and Freedom Coalition in Washington D.C., where he described communism as "ruthless and godless" and labeled it as the most serious threat facing the country.
In his post, Trump explained why he believes that ideology is dangerously appealing: "Communism is very easy to sell. I would be the Greatest Communist in History. I would give free income, free houses, free food, everything is free. Unfortunately, after two or three years, the country where this happens would fail."
The leader warned about the consequences that, in his opinion, this model brings: "There will be no food, no housing, no army, nothing. They will be a Third World nation in every sense, and everyone will suffer or die."
The immediate trigger for this offensive was the victory of progressive candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primaries on June 24 and 25, as well as the historic vote by the city's Rent Guidelines Board to freeze rents for over a million tenants. Trump interpreted both events as a sign of communism advancing on American soil.
Last Wednesday, Trump had already hinted at his stance with a message on Truth Social: "The communists are finally making their move. I have been waiting and preparing for this for a long time. The game has begun. Enjoy watching!"
This anti-communist rhetoric is not new to the Trump administration. In November 2025, he officially proclaimed the "Anti-Communist Week" from the second to the eighth of that month, noting that communism has taken more than 100 million lives in regimes that suppress freedom.
In terms of foreign policy, Trump signed two executive orders against the Cuban dictatorship: 14380, on January 29, 2026, which declared Cuba an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to national security, and the 14404, on May 1, 2026, which expanded sanctions by freezing assets of regime officials and their adult relatives.
Mamdani, whom Trump systematically labels as a "communist," defines himself as a "democratic socialist" and was sworn in as mayor of New York on January 2, 2026. Following his election, Trump threatened to cut $7.4 billion in federal funds to the city.
The speech before the Faith and Freedom Coalition added a religious dimension to the message: Trump warned that "all communist countries violently attack religions" and that the communists "will close your churches and kill your people," thereby linking anti-communism with the defense of religious freedom to a conservative Christian audience.
