Switzerland eliminated Algeria with a 2-0 victory in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, held on Thursday at the , securing their place in the knockout stage of the tournament with a solid and uncompromising performance.

The match started with the Swiss taking the initiative from the very first minute. Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a precise header, following a setup from Johan Manzambi that completely unsettled the Algerian defense. The early goal influenced the game's development and forced Algeria to change their approach.

The Africans attempted to respond with greater possession of the ball — they managed to control 55% compared to Switzerland's 45% — but were unable to convert it into clear chances. Just before halftime, Dan Ndoye sealed the match with a powerful shot from the edge of the area in the 46th minute that found its way into the right post, leaving the score at 2-0 at the start of the second half.

Algeria sought to spark a reaction with a massive overhaul of their lineup: in the 58th minute, Houssem Aouar and Ramiz Zerrouki came off, and in the 71st minute, Riyad Mahrez, one of the most anticipated figures in the North African team, left the field. However, none of the substitutions were able to seriously trouble the Swiss defense, which finished the match with composure and without any surprises.

The statistics clearly reflect Switzerland's tactical dominance despite ceding possession: the Swiss generated 9 shots, four of which were on target, compared to Algeria's seven attempts with only two on goal. Corner kicks also favored Switzerland (four to two), and the Swiss finished the match without receiving any yellow cards, while Algeria accumulated two: one for Farid Chaibi in the 36th minute and another for Hicham Boudaoui in the 72nd, just one minute after entering the field.

With this result, Switzerland advances to the round of 16, and Algeria is eliminated from the tournament, marking the end of their return to the World Cup after 12 years of absence since Brazil 2014. The Algerians qualified as one of the best third-placed teams in Group J with 4 points and a negative goal difference, following an inconsistent group stage that included a loss to Argentina (0-3), a victory over Jordan (2-1), and a draw against Austria (3-3).

Embolo, with his goal against Algeria, has a total of five goals in the tournament — four in the group stage — and establishes himself as the top Swiss scorer of the 2026 World Cup. The forward was one of the standout players in a group stage where Switzerland finished as the undisputed leader of Group B with 7 points, thanks to victories over Bosnia (4-1) and Canada (2-1), and a draw against Qatar (1-1).

In the round of 16, Switzerland will face off on Tuesday, July 7, again at BC Place in Vancouver, against the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana, which is taking place this Friday. The Swiss arrive at this matchup as one of the most consistent teams in the tournament, with a defense that has not conceded any goals in the knockout stage and an in-form Embolo.
