The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado published a message on her X account this Saturday to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, in which she drew a parallel between the founding values of that nation and the battle that Venezuela is currently fighting to regain its democracy.

"Two and a half centuries of a history marked by immense challenges, but above all, by an indomitable determination: the certainty that freedom is the only foundation upon which a prosperous and dignified nation is built," wrote Machado, describing the United States as "the great beacon of hope for the free world."

The opposition leader evoked the legacy of the Founding Fathers to connect it with the Venezuelan reality: "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are inalienable rights. They are not gifts from a monarch, nor concessions from a ruler; they are rights granted by the Creator that belong to each individual by virtue of their inherent human dignity."

Machado emphasized the proximity of the dates on the calendar between the two national holidays as a symbol of a deeper bond: "It is no coincidence that our foundational dates are linked in the calendar: tomorrow, July 5, Venezuelans commemorate 215 years of our own struggle for Independence. This closeness in time symbolizes a shared destiny: the unwavering desire to be free."

In this context, he described the current situation in his country as a historical struggle: "Venezuelans are fighting our own historical battle to reclaim those same principles: the separation of powers, independent justice, and the dignity of citizens."

The message included an explicit thank you to the government of Washington: “We express our deepest gratitude to the people of the United States; to President Trump and his administration; to their officials, military personnel, and public servants. Your support has been a testament to solidarity, strength, and defense of the values of freedom at a crucial moment for Venezuela and for our hemisphere.”

Machado's gesture towards the Trump administration comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two sides.

On Friday, Machado stated that she needs protection in order to return to Venezuela, and in previous months she was excluded from the negotiations facilitated by Qatar regarding a possible post-Maduro transition.

Trump also withdrew his formal support for Machado after she accepted the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, expressing doubts about her ability to lead the Venezuelan transition.

Despite this, the opposition member publicly maintains a stance aligned with Washington.

This Saturday, the United States celebrates its Semiquincentennial with central events at the National Mall in Washington D.C., amid a politically divided nation, according to reports El País.

Machado closed his message with a statement of resolve that encapsulates his stance on the Venezuelan crisis: "Let us remain steadfast on this path. Freedom always prevails."
