The body of Lizbeth Bustos Vera, a 43-year-old woman originally from Minatitlán, Veracruz, and a Canadian national, was found on Saturday night buried in the backyard of a house in Cancún, in a case that the Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo is investigating as an alleged femicide.
The discovery occurred in a property located on Bacalar Street, nearly at the corner with Kohunlich Avenue, in Supermanzana 46, where agents from the Investigative Ministerial Police and forensic experts conducted an operation after detecting signs that pointed to the possible existence of a clandestine grave, local media reported.
During the proceedings, specialists exhumed a corpse that was in an advanced state of decomposition. The body had been buried in a pit about 30 centimeters deep and approximately two meters long, covered with concrete blocks, cement, and sand, seemingly with the intent to conceal it.
He had disappeared when he was planning to return to Canada
Lizbeth Bustos Vera had been reported missing on June 16. According to a report from the Diario del Istmo, which cites information from Reporteros Ahora, she informed her relatives in Veracruz that she planned to return to Canada with her husband that day, but she never arrived at her destination.
The woman had previously traveled to Mexico with her two young children to handle matters related to an inheritance, while her husband stayed in Canada.
Upon losing contact with her, her family reached out to her husband, who confirmed that Lizbeth had never returned to the country. They subsequently filed the appropriate complaint, which led to the activation of the Alba Protocol for her search.
The investigation points to her romantic partner
Investigations are focused on the victim's romantic partner, with whom they had been in a relationship for approximately seven months and shared the home where the body was later found.
According to Diario del Istmo, the main line of investigation suggests that the man discovered that Lizbeth was planning to end their relationship in order to reunite with her husband in Canada, a situation that allegedly triggered the crime.
Authorities are also investigating whether the suspect attempted to take possession of the property and access financial resources sent from Canada for the victim's children's support.
So far, the Quintana Roo Prosecutor's Office has not reported any arrests nor has it officially revealed the identity or nationality of the main suspect.
On social media and in posts from the victim's acquaintances, an unofficial claim has been made pointing to a Cuban citizen as the suspected responsible party. Additionally, Diario del Istmo, citing Reporteros Ahora, identifies the suspect only as "Adriel N.", a Cuban national working as a barber. However, none of this information has been confirmed by the authorities. There are rumors circulating on social media that his name is Yadriel Corona, originally from the province of Cienfuegos.
Investigations are ongoing
During the processing of the scene, Lizbeth's brother and several uncles were present, who, with the authorities' permission, removed some personal belongings from the property.
As part of the proceedings, the Prosecutor's Office also seized a Volkswagen Vento car that is allegedly owned by the victim.
The authorities have not officially reported on the situation of Lizbeth's two minor children. According to accounts from neighbors gathered by local media, both children would be under the care of their father in Canada.
The Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo is continuing the investigation to clarify the circumstances of the crime and determine the corresponding responsibilities.
