A Cuban resident in the United States for almost five decades became the center of attention on social media after posting an emotional video on TikTok in which she firmly defends her love and loyalty to the country that welcomed her, in response to those who questioned her sense of belonging.
The author of the video, known on the platform as @la_patrona1960, recorded the clip on July 3rd, the eve of Independence Day in the United States, and in less than 49 seconds delivered a testimony that resonated widely within the Cuban community in exile.
"My honor and glory belong to this country, and if I have to give my life for it, I will, because it is the country that has given me everything," the woman stated with evident emotion, addressing directly those who were questioning her loyalty.
In the video, the Cuban woman specifies that she has been living in the United States for 46 to 47 years, which would place her arrival around 1979, and that she has been an American citizen for 25 years. Among the reasons for her gratitude, she mentions her three children, her four grandchildren, and the opportunities that the country has offered her.
"Above all, my three children and my four grandchildren and great opportunities," he emphasized, before closing the video with a heartfelt message: "I love you, United States, may God bless you always, amen."
The testimony encapsulates the experience of an entire generation of Cubans who emigrated in the late seventies, many of whom benefited from the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966, which allowed them to obtain permanent residency after a year and a day of being in the country, and subsequently full citizenship.
This generation became deeply integrated into American society, especially in South Florida, and developed a strong Cuban-American identity characterized by gratitude towards their adopted country and a rejection of the regime that forced them to leave.
The video accumulated over 123,000 views, 3,166 «likes» and 778 comments, becoming one of the most shared content within the Cuban community on TikTok during the July 4th celebrations.
The contrast with the situation of thousands of newly arrived Cubans is striking: more than 500,000 compatriots currently remain in a migratory limbo with the I-220A form, without a clear path to permanent residency, while those who arrived decades ago are already celebrating as full citizens.
The release of the video on the eve of July 4th was not coincidental: for the Cuban community in exile, American Independence Day carries a special symbolic weight, as it represents the reaffirmation of the freedom they were unable to exercise in Cuba under dictatorship.
“Congratulations to this great country, the best country in the world, the country of everything,” concluded @la_patrona1960, summarizing in a few words what it means for many Cubans of her generation to have built a life away from the Island.
