Elián González, a deputy in the National Assembly of People's Power and a propaganda figure of the Cuban regime, stated during his visit to Spain that the Cuban people, despite their exhaustion, clearly identify the source of their problems, which he claims is the embargo imposed by the United States.
"As much as the Cuban people are tired, they know where the evil lies," González stated in an interview given to the Spanish magazine Contexto y Acción (Ctxt), published this Friday.
The publication, authored by journalist Aníbal Malvar, captures the statements made by the deputy during his stay in Spain, where he traveled as a guest of the State Movement for Solidarity with Cuba (MESC).
González described the current situation on the island as "the worst blockade experienced during the revolutionary period" and characterized it as "a brutal, medieval siege, with no legitimacy," while attributing the crisis solely to U.S. sanctions and avoiding any responsibility on the part of the regime.
When the journalist asked him if the economic reforms promoted by the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel represent a shift towards a more mixed model, González dodged the direct answer and asserted that Cuba is seeking its own path.
"We are not going to copy any model. We do not copy the Russian model, we do not copy the Chinese model. We are trying to build our own socialism," he stated.
In a parallel interview with the Asturian newspaper El Comercio, González was unable to point out a single mistake of the Cuban government when asked for self-criticism.
"The reality is that it would be difficult for me to tell him. I wish I knew what to do to get out of this situation," he replied.
Regarding the possibility of a military intervention ordered by President Donald Trump, the deputy stated: "We fear an intervention due to what it could mean in terms of loss of life, but not from the standpoint of undertaking it. We do not fear facing the United States as an enemy."
On July 5th, González participated in the XXXIX Semana Negra de Gijón in a round table discussion alongside Fidel Castro Smirnov, grandson of the dictator Fidel Castro (1926-2016), in front of more than 350 people.
The event was interrupted by young Cuban Adelainys Castán, who shouted "Murderers!" and sang "Homeland and Life," which sparked controversy over the use of the festival as a propaganda platform for the regime.
González's statement pattern is consistent with his role as the spokesperson for the regime. In October 2025, he stated in Mexico that the Cuban government "does not make major mistakes" and blamed Washington for the entire crisis.
Last May, he described the criminal allegation from the U.S. Department of Justice against former president Raúl Castro regarding the downing of the Brothers to the Rescue planes in 1996 as a "sham."
González, 32 years old, was elected as a deputy for the municipality of Cárdenas in 2022 after being nominated by organizations aligned with the regime. He also works as the assistant director of AT Comercial Varadero, a company subordinate to the military elite conglomerate GAESA.
Her visit to Spain coincided with the approval, on July 7, of an urgent debate in the UN on the embargo against Cuba with 136 votes in favor, nine against, and 30 abstentions, marking the lowest support in over three decades compared to the 165 votes obtained in October 2025.
