The 25-year-old Cuban, Yuviosmar Galindo Cardona, passed away last Friday after suffering a workplace accident at a construction site in Providence, East Bank Demerara, Guyana.

According to the newspaper Kaieteur News, the accident occurred around 9:45 in the morning, while the young man was operating a high-pressure hose connected to a cement pumping machine.

The Guyanese Police, through Regional Division 4B, reported that Galindo Cardona lost control of the equipment, causing the hose to swing violently and hit him on the head, resulting in severe injuries.

Colleagues immediately transported him to the Public Hospital of Georgetown, where doctors confirmed his passing shortly after his arrival.

The young man's body was taken to a funeral home, where it will remain until the autopsy is conducted, while authorities continue to investigate to clarify the circumstances of the accident.

The media iNews Guyana points out that this incident occurs at a time when the Ministry of Labor and Human Resource Planning is conducting a national campaign called "Prioritizing Safety," specifically aimed at construction sites to promote a safer and healthier work environment.

Another tragedy for the Cuban community in Guyana

The death of Galindo Cardona adds to a series of fatalities of Cuban citizens reported in Guyana in recent months, due to both workplace accidents and violent incidents.

Among the recent cases is that of Dailén Paneque Gomes, a 26-year-old woman allegedly murdered by her partner, a Guyanese police officer who confessed to the crime. Also notable are the deaths of Wilber Fonseca Fonseca, found dead in June under circumstances still being investigated; Dainier Vegas Infante, 23 years old, shot to death in Georgetown; Yohanis Urquiaga Zulueta, 46 years old, who died in a traffic accident; and Dayrovis Martínez Mendoza, 24 years old, who passed away in September 2025 after the collapse of a concrete wall at another construction site.

These events occur in the context of strong economic growth driven by Guyana's oil industry, which has increased the demand for foreign labor, especially in the construction, welding, and masonry sectors.

Providence, where the accident involving Galindo Cardona occurred, is one of the areas with the highest construction activity in the country due to the development of new housing and infrastructure projects, including the expansion of the road connecting Georgetown to Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
