A 35-year-old woman identified as Emely Barberena was arrested this Wednesday after allegedly stabbing a man near the Tri-Rail station in Hialeah, located at 1125 East 25th Street, leaving him seriously injured.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) reported that its agents, along with fire and rescue teams, responded to the scene around 7:20 a.m. and found the victim -whose identity was not revealed- with apparent stab wounds.
A group of paramedics transported her to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
A stolen bicycle sparked the confrontation
It all began hours earlier when someone stole the victim's bicycle, and she filed a report with the Hialeah Police Department.
Upon arriving at the train station, the victim recognized Barberena and her boyfriend in possession of the stolen vehicle, according to the arrest report cited by Univision.
"The victim had arrived at the station when he saw a woman and her boyfriend, who had his bicycle in their possession, which had been stolen earlier that same Wednesday," the police report states.
Barberena's boyfriend threw the bicycle at the victim, causing her to fall onto the train tracks and triggering a fight among the three.
A fight that escalated onto the train tracks
During the confrontation, the victim grabbed a broomstick and struck Barberena when she approached him.
"The woman managed to arm herself with a broken piece of the broomstick and struck the victim while her boyfriend began to punch and hit him," the arrest report states.
At a critical moment, the victim pushed Barberena onto the train tracks, and the boyfriend responded by pushing the victim onto the tracks as well.
"While the victim was unarmed on the tracks, Barberena allegedly inflicted a cut on his face with a knife," according to the report cited by Local 10.
Previously, Barberena had already stabbed the victim in the torso and in one arm. In total, the man suffered a stab wound to the abdomen, a cut on one arm, a laceration on the cheek, and other injuries resulting from the fall and the fight.
Barberena was found at a bus stop
After the attack, both suspects fled on foot from the scene. However, the agents found Barberena shortly after at a bus stop in front of the station itself.
She was transferred to Hialeah Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, and once she was discharged, she was formally arrested.
"The investigators indicated that the footage from the surveillance cameras reviewed during the investigation corroborated the victim's account," reported the aforementioned media outlet.
Barberena is facing a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which in Florida is classified as a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
The boyfriend remains at large
Barberena's boyfriend, whose identity has not been disclosed, fled before the agents arrived and remains at large, as confirmed by the MDSO.
Hialeah has recorded several violent incidents in recent months, including a stabbing in May and a raid at a bar with 14 arrests in February.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the suspect's whereabouts to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
