The 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina left much more than the conquest of the second star for La Roja.

While social media was flooded with memes inverting the iconic image of a baby Lamine Yamal being bathed by Lionel Messi—with montages where the young Spaniard was now the one "bathing" the Argentine captain as a symbol of generational change—on the field of MetLife Stadium, in New Jersey, a much more emotional and genuine scene unfolded.

After the match, and before joining the celebrations for the world title, while most of the Spanish footballers celebrated on the pitch the historic victory achieved thanks to the goal by Ferran Torres in extra time, Lamine preferred to pause for a few seconds to acknowledge the career of the player he has always pointed out as one of his great role models.

Messi, who remained on the field with a distant look after Argentina's defeat, got up to greet the young Spanish winger.

The Spanish international shook hands with the Argentine star and embraced him in a hug filled with respect and admiration.

The image of the hug quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the final.

It is a scene that many fans interpreted as the symbolic passing of the baton between two generations of soccer.

During the ceremony following the match, Messi was also seen warmly greeting several Spanish soccer players, including Eric García and Ferran Torres, former teammates at FC Barcelona.

The attitude of the Argentine captain contrasted with the tension experienced in other areas of the field, where some members of the Albiceleste were involved in brawls after the final whistle.

The photograph that went viral again

Lamine Yamal's gesture gained even more significance due to the story that connects him to the Argentine star.

In 2007, when Lamine was a baby, he participated with his family in a charity calendar organized by FC Barcelona and UNICEF.

During that photoshoot, Messi held the little one in his arms and helped bathe him for the cameras, an image that, over the years, took on an almost legendary status following the emergence of the young talent in the global elite.

That photograph has been recirculated countless times since Lamine Yamal's emergence with Barcelona and the Spanish national team, but it reached a new dimension after the final of this World Cup.

The embrace between the two soccer players caused thousands of fans to share the original snapshot once again, recalling the surprising bond that connects two great figures from different generations.

The memes of Messi and Lamine flooded the networks

Beyond football, the final also gave rise to one of the most significant viral phenomena of the 2026 World Cup.

After Spain's victory, thousands of users began sharing edited versions of the historic photograph of Messi and Lamine Yamal, switching the roles: instead of the Argentine bathing the baby, it was now the young world champion who was shown bathing Messi.

The montage became one of the most shared memes of the tournament. Illustrations, photo montages, AI-generated videos, and all kinds of versions circulated on X, Instagram, and TikTok, using the image as a metaphor for the generational change in football following the World Cup farewell of the Argentine captain.

Fans interpreted the meme as a reflection of a changing of the guard: Messi was closing one of the most brilliant careers in history while Lamine Yamal was establishing himself as a key figure of the new generation in world football, after leading Spain to its second World Cup.
