The Argentine president Javier Milei reacted this Sunday to the defeat of the Albiceleste team in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a brief message acknowledging the team, which he posted on social media.
"Thank you very much, players...!!! Until the end with our boots on. Argentina always on top," wrote the president on his X account, just minutes after Spain won 1-0 in extra time and was crowned world champion.
The message contrasted with the euphoria that Milei had shown during the tournament. After Argentina's comeback against Egypt in the knockout rounds, the president enthusiastically celebrated on social media: "LET'S GO ARGENTINA, DAMN...!!! What a way to suffer," and later confessed in an interview: "I cried, I was moved to the core."
He watched the final from the Quinta de Olivos
Milei did not travel to the United States to attend the match held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The president decided to maintain the ritual he had followed throughout the World Cup and watched the final from the cinema of the presidential residence in Quinta de Olivos, accompanied by his sister Karina.
A day before the match, he had ruled out any possibility of attending the stadium. “There’s no way I’m traveling to the United States this Sunday. I will watch the match from Olivos like the first day,” he stated in an interview with Radio El Observador 107.9.
Scaloni: "They were better."
After the match, the Argentine coach, Lionel Scaloni, acknowledged the superiority of the opponent and expressed gratitude for the efforts of his players.
“Sadness, but we have given it our all. Eternal gratitude to these guys who reached another final and competed. They were better, but I hold a great memory of this group. We need to acknowledge the significance of having come this far; it was really hard,” he stated, according to a report from TyC Sports.
Meanwhile, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) wrote on its social media: "INFINITE THANKS, GUYS! Words are not enough to express our gratitude for how you defended the jersey. You made us cry, shout, and, above all, believe again. You are eternal!".
Spain won the title thanks to a goal from Ferran Torres in the 106th minute of extra time, after the regular time ended goalless.
With the victory, the Spanish national team lifted its second World Cup, 16 years after the historic title won in South Africa 2010, while Argentina was unable to defend the crown obtained in Qatar 2022.
Argentina had reached the decisive match after eliminating England in the semifinals, while Spain overcame France.
The final also marked the first encounter between both teams in a match for the world title and awarded Spain a record prize of 50 million dollars, established by FIFA for the tournament champion.
