Google awaits authorization to release 32 million mosquitoes in Florida: the reason behind the controversial plan

Google requested the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for experimental authorization to release up to 32 million male mosquitoes in Florida over the course of two years, at a rate of 16 million annually.

Far from increasing the infestation, the goal is to reduce the population of Culex quinquefasciatus, known as the southern house mosquito, a species capable of transmitting the West Nile virus, reported WUFT

The specimens that will be released are males of the DQB strain, carriers of the natural bacterium Wolbachia pipientis wAlbB.

When these males mate with wild females, a reproductive incompatibility occurs that prevents the eggs from hatching, progressively reducing the population of the species.

Eva Buckner, a professor specializing in medical entomology at the University of Florida, dismissed the notion that the release poses a direct risk to residents, as male mosquitoes do not feed on blood and, therefore, do not bite or transmit diseases to humans.

"Male animals are only interested in mating with females. That's what they focus on," Buckner explained to WUFT.

The specialist also emphasized why the mechanism is promising: females store sperm after mating and use it to produce eggs for the rest of their lives.

"It's very exciting that a single mating can cause a female to produce sterile offspring for the rest of her life," she stated.

The southern house mosquito primarily feeds on birds and usually shows less interest in humans than other species.

However, it can transmit the West Nile virus when it bites an infected bird and subsequently a person.

"Sometimes they can't find a bird to feed on, or there is simply a human nearby. So they seize the opportunity, bite that person, and this can lead to infection," explained Buckner.

The Google request was published in the Federal Register on May 6, 2026. The public comment period ended on June 5.

The proposal is still under review by the EPA, and so far, the agency has not announced the final approval of the experimental permit.

Additionally, it also includes the release of another 32 million in California, meaning the program could reach a combined maximum of 64 million copies between both states.

The project is part of Debug, an initiative originally developed by Verily that was fully acquired by Google in December 2024.

This becomes significant after Florida confirmed a human case of West Nile virus acquired in the state in 2026. The infection was reported in May in Alachua County, home to Gainesville.

The Florida Department of Health stated that this was the only human case recorded in the state up until the epidemiological week of June 14 to 20.

Florida also monitors other mosquito-borne diseases, including Eastern equine encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, dengue, Zika, and chikungunya.

Some of these diseases can affect the central nervous system and lead to encephalitis, meningitis, and other serious complications.

Eastern equine encephalitis can have a mortality rate close to 30% among individuals who develop the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider the mosquito the deadliest animal in the world.

Malaria alone caused approximately 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths in 83 countries during 2023.
