The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced this Friday a complete and continuous closure of NE 13 Street in downtown Miami, which will last from tonight until Monday morning, as part of the drainage improvement works for the Connecting Miami megaproject.
According to the notice published by FDOT South on social media, the closure includes the stretch of NE 13 Street between Biscayne Boulevard and NE 2 Avenue, and will begin tonight at 10 p.m. and conclude at 6 a.m. on Monday, July 27, with no interruptions over the weekend.
The affected area is located in the vicinity of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, one of the busiest areas in downtown Miami.
Authorities urged drivers to plan their routes through downtown in advance.
"Plan ahead, use alternate routes, and allow extra travel time," stated FDOT in their official announcement.
The closure is part of the I-395/S.R. 836/I-95 Design-Build project, known as Connecting Miami, one of the most ambitious road infrastructure projects in the city's history.
This megaproject includes the reconstruction of 1.4 miles of the I-395/SR 836/I-95 corridor, including the construction of the so-called Signature Bridge, a six-arch bridge over Biscayne Boulevard that will connect downtown with the MacArthur Causeway.
The initial budget for the project was $802 million, a figure that later climbed to over $866 million due to modifications and issues during construction, according to a report on the failures that have delayed the project.
The delivery date has also been postponed several times. FDOT confirmed that the project will not be completed before 2029.
The closures on NE 13 Street are not new for the residents of the area. In May 2026, a scheduled drainage closure on that same street had to be postponed due to forecasted rain, and FDOT stated at that time that it would publish a new schedule when weather conditions permitted.
The project has also faced other setbacks. In January 2026, it experienced a temporary suspension due to an accident at the site while FDOT and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) were conducting investigations.
The closures this weekend will not be the last in the area. According to the weekly project update for Connecting Miami, overnight closures of Biscayne Boulevard between NE 11 Street and NE 13 Street are also scheduled for the week of July 27 to August 1, from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., with possible additional daytime closures between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
