The Cuban badminton player Taymara Oropesa was crowned Central Caribbean champion in women's singles this Tuesday during the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026, ending an eight-year wait that included two consecutive finals lost.
The athlete from Holguín defeated the Mexican Vanesa García in a match that she had to come back from after the first set, with scores of 15-21, 22-20, and 21-15, at the Badminton Pavilion of Parque del Este.
The victory holds a special significance in Oropesa's career: he had reached the finals in Barranquilla 2018 and San Salvador 2023, finishing with silver on both occasions.
This time, the 30-year-old athlete did not succumb to the pressure and turned her third consecutive Central Caribbean final into the title she was missing.
Oropesa is the most prominent figure in Cuban badminton over the past decade. At the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, she became the first Cuban badminton player to ascend to the Pan American podium, winning bronze in women's singles.
Her accolades also include the gold medal in mixed doubles at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, as well as recent victories at the International Series Tournament in Havana 2026, where she triumphed in both women's doubles and mixed doubles.
The individual gold comes at a difficult time for Cuban badminton at these Games: the team did not reach the podium in the mixed team event, having lost to El Salvador 1-3 in the bronze medal match.
Oropesa's performance thus gains greater significance as the most distinguished achievement in the discipline for Santo Domingo 2026.
Cuba arrived at this edition with 504 athletes registered and the goal of finishing among the top three in the overall medal standings, aiming for around 67 gold medals. At the close of Monday's events, the Cuban delegation was in third place in the medal table with six golds, two silvers, and six bronzes.
The day on Tuesday was not yet over for Oropesa when the news broke: the athlete from Holguín was set to compete in the women's doubles final, where she was aiming for a second gold medal on the same day.
