A gold medal won by a member of the Cuban baseball team that triumphed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics was sold for $15,008, including the buyer's premium, at an auction organized by the American firm RR Auction.
The auction lot closed on July 23 and exceeded the estimated minimum price set by the auction house, which had valued it at $12,000 or more.
Although RR Auction confirmed that the medal belonged to a member of the Olympic championship team, it did not disclose the identity of the former player who decided to sell it.
The medal, made of gilded silver, retains its original ribbon in shades of green and gold and was presented along with the official wooden case from the Centennial Olympic Games, held in Atlanta in 1996.
A historic generation of Cuban baseball
The Cuban team arrived in Atlanta as the Olympic champion after winning gold in Barcelona 1992 and confirmed its dominance by claiming its second consecutive title.
Directed by Jorge Fuentes, the team finished the qualifying phase undefeated, defeated Nicaragua 8-1 in the semifinals, and overcame Japan 13-9 in the final after breaking a 6-6 tie with a crucial four-run rally in the sixth inning.
That selection brought together several of the greatest figures in Cuban baseball, including Omar Linares, Orestes Kindelán, Pedro Luis Lazo, José Contreras, and Antonio Pacheco.
An increasingly common phenomenon
The sale adds to a growing list of Cuban Olympic medals that have ended up in international auction houses, a phenomenon that many former athletes have linked to the economic difficulties they face after retiring from high-performance sports.
RR Auction itself has sold several medals from Cuban athletes in recent years. In July 2024, the gold medal from taekwondo athlete Ángel Valodia Matos, won at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, was sold for $51,620, while boxer Roniel Iglesias's medal fetched $83,188. According to Playoff Magazine, another medal from the Cuban baseball team at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, attributed to Miguel Caldés, was previously auctioned for $21,963.
One of the most widely discussed cases was that of boxer Mario Kindelán, who in December 2023 publicly admitted that he had sold his Olympic gold medal from Sydney 2000 due to his financial issues, a confession that reignited the debate about the situation many Cuban athletes face after their careers end.
Baseball was one of the most successful sports for Cuba in the Olympic Games. The national team won three gold medals (Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, and Athens 2004) and two silver medals (Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008), becoming the only team to reach the podium in every Olympic edition in which the sport was part of the official program.
