begins this Wednesday with the dollar remaining unchanged compared to the previous day, while the euro has slightly decreased.

At 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the US dollar remains around 673 Cuban pesos.

The European currency, for its part, has decreased by 2.5 pesos and is now at 785 CUP.

The freely convertible currency (MLC), with very few transactions recorded during this time frame, is around 478 pesos, although this value should be considered merely indicative.

Exchange Rate Evolution

Rate summary

  • Exchange rate of the USD dollar to CUP: 673 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 785 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of MLC to CUP: 478 CUP (indicative value, few data).

The dollar remains unchanged

The U.S. dollar is quoted at 673 CUP in the informal market: with a buying price of 670 CUP and a selling price of 675 CUP.

In the weekly comparison, the greenback has risen by 5 pesos (+0.7%) compared to 668 CUP from seven days ago.

In the monthly outlook, the quotation is positioned 62.5 pesos above the level of 30 days ago, when it was around 610 CUP. However, it is important to note that this difference may partially reflect methodological adjustments of the index.

In the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a minimum of 610 CUP and a maximum of 675 CUP.

The dollar continues to drive the dynamics of the informal market in a context of structural shortages of foreign currency.

The euro slips slightly

The euro is quoted at 785 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying price of 780 CUP and a selling price of 790 CUP.

This represents a drop of 2.5 pesos compared to the previous day, when it closed at 788 CUP.

Despite this slight setback, the European currency has accumulated a gain of 10 pesos (+1.3%) compared to seven days ago, when it was at 775 CUP.

In the last month, the euro has risen by 94.5 pesos from 691 CUP 30 days ago, although this variation should be interpreted cautiously as it may include methodological adjustments.

The monthly range extends from a minimum of 691 CUP to a maximum of 790 CUP.

The euro surpasses the dollar by 112 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

The MLC, indicative value

The MLC is around 478 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a purchase at 436 CUP and a sale at 519 CUP.

The available data in this range is scarce, so the value should be regarded as merely indicative.

Compared to the previous day, the reference falls 7 pesos (-1.4%) from the 485 CUP recorded yesterday.

In the weekly comparison, however, the MLC has risen by 38.5 pesos (+8.8%) compared to the 439 CUP from seven days ago.

In the last month, the MLC has fluctuated between a minimum of 410 CUP and a maximum of 543 CUP.

Without a physical existence, its use is limited to the state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

Gap between the informal market and the official rate

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) remains at 605 CUP per dollar and 689 CUP per euro, significantly below the rates that are applied in the daily informal currency market.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and does not meet the actual demand for foreign currencies from the population.

The gap between the official exchange rate and the informal one reflects the persistent scarcity of foreign currency in the state banking system and the high demand for dollars and euros from the population, whether to emigrate, import goods, protect savings, or make purchases in the private sector.

    Impact on the Cuban economy

In a context of sustained inflation, low state wages, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly affects internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.

With the informal dollar surpassing the official dollar by 68 pesos and the informal euro leading by 96 pesos over its official equivalent, the gap between both markets remains one of the most visible expressions of the economic crisis affecting the island.

    Methodology

The Exchange Rate from CiberCuba is an index of the informal Cuban market, created through the automated analysis of thousands of currency buying and selling posts in Telegram and Facebook groups.

The calculation disregards atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each operation according to its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated multiple times a day.
