A young Cuban was celebrating his birthday without suspecting that the entertainer dressed as Mickey Mouse was hiding the best possible gift: his own mother. The emotional reunion was captured in a video published on TikTok by the account Midanis Regalos (@regaloscuba) and quickly moved those who watched it.
The surprise was meticulously planned. The mother hid inside the costume of the popular character, and he never imagined that she was inside Mickey, all set for a reunion.
When she finally revealed herself, the tears kept flowing. "She can't stop crying," the post itself describes, in a scene that encapsulates, in just two minutes, the weight of distance and the significance of an unexpected embrace.
This type of surprise reunion has become a sustained trend on TikTok over the past two years, driven by the massive emigration from Cuba. Between 2021 and 2024, approximately 1.79 million Cubans left the island, leaving behind parents, children, and partners with whom, in many cases, they do not meet again for years.
Just in the last week of July, several similar videos have circulated widely. On Tuesday, the Cuban Glenda shared her reunion with her brother after three years apart, a clip that gathered more than 27,700 views. On Wednesday, another Cuban surprised her mother on her birthday after four years without seeing each other, with nearly 13,400 views in less than 24 hours.
The format of the disguised surprise is not new either. In May, a Cuban arrived disguised at his mother's house in a video that went viral, and on July 7, a mother living in the United States traveled to Cuba to surprise her son on his 18th birthday, with the same outcome: tears and a hug that said it all.
TikTok has established itself as the main platform where the Cuban diaspora documents these long-anticipated returns. The most frequently used formats include the "fake package," surprise arrivals, and, as in this case, disguises of characters that conceal the family member until the last second.
Each of these videos serves as a small collective catharsis: the separation experienced by millions of Cuban families momentarily transformed into a reunion.
