A Cuban mother who emigrated took her 15-month-old daughter to Cuba so she could experience her family roots, and the moment was captured in an emotional video posted on TikTok last Sunday by the account @ismerysalazar.
In the description of the post, Ismery Salazar explained her motivation in simple and direct words: "I took her to Cuba when she was just 15 months old so that she could know her roots, her family, and that little piece of land that is also a part of her. Seeing her enjoy every moment made it all worthwhile."
The little girl, as her mother described, adapted to the surroundings as if she had always lived there: she ate fresh fruits, played, and spent time with her grandparents during the visit.
The most emotional aspect of the story is the paradox that Ismery openly acknowledges: the girl is too young to retain conscious memories of the trip, but that does not diminish the significance of the moment.
"My girl won't remember this trip... but I'll never forget seeing her so happy," the mother wrote in the post.
The video, lasting just 32 seconds, garnered over 26,400 views, 1,490 likes, and 105 comments within a few days, reflecting how much this type of experience resonates with the Cuban community abroad.
Ismery’s post aligns with a growing trend on TikTok during 2025 and 2026: Cuban emigrants documenting the first trip of their young children to the island to connect them with grandparents, great-grandparents, and other relatives.
In May of this year, Cuban Diame Espinosa returned to Cuba with her baby so that the little girl could meet her grandparents for the first time, in a reunion that also went viral.
That same month, another Cuban sent her baby to Cuba with the father because she could not travel without jeopardizing her immigration status in the United States, a common situation among diaspora mothers.
In July of this year, another Cuban mother sent her parents on the island clothes of her son with his scent, a symbolic gesture that also sparked a broad response among emigrated Cuban women.
Behind each of these videos lies the same reality: families fractured by years of mass emigration, grandparents who do not know their grandchildren, and mothers who seek to build a bridge between two worlds before it's too late.
The case of Ismery and her daughter clearly illustrates this drive: even though the girl may not carry the memory within her, her mother made sure that the root remained planted.
