opens this August 1st with a day of calm for the two main currencies.
At 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the US dollar and the euro show no changes compared to the previous session, while the MLC notes a slight decline, although this data should be taken with caution due to the low trading volume during this time period.
Summary of informal market rates
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 673 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 785 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 472 CUP (indicative value, limited data).
The dollar remains unchanged and above the levels from a month ago
The United States dollar is trading at 673 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, the same value reported in the previous day.
Seven days ago, the exchange rate was 674 CUP, which means a minimal difference of just one peso.
Exchange Rate Evolution
The monthly trend, on the other hand, does reflect a more visible pressure on the Cuban peso: 30 days ago, the dollar was around 625 CUP, which represents an increase of 48 pesos in that period, although it is worth noting that this comparison may also reflect methodological adjustments of the index and not just pure market movement.
In the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 625 CUP and a high of 675 CUP in the informal market.
It continues to set the pace of the informal market in a context of structural foreign exchange scarcity.
The euro, stable and as the most expensive currency in the parallel market
The euro is quoted at 785 Cuban pesos (CUP), with no changes compared to the previous day or seven days ago, when it was also at 785 CUP.
The monthly comparison shows, however, a significant trend: thirty days ago, the euro was around 707 CUP, which implies an increase of 78 pesos. Nevertheless, just like with the dollar, this figure should be interpreted cautiously as it may include methodological adjustments.
In the past month, the European currency has reached a high of 790 CUP and a low of 708 CUP.
It is asserted as the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market, exceeding the dollar by 112 pesos at today's average value.
The MLC is declining, with indicative data
The MLC, an exclusively digital currency, is valued at around 472 Cuban pesos (CUP) according to the available data at this opening.
This represents a decrease of three pesos from the 475 CUP of the previous day.
Seven days ago, it was quoted at 473 CUP, practically the same level.
In the last month, the MLC has experienced a decrease from 500 CUP 30 days ago, with a maximum of 543 CUP and a minimum of 410 CUP during that period.
It is important to emphasize that the value of the MLC during this time frame is indicative, given the low volume of recorded transactions.
Without a physical existence, its use is limited to state-run stores that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
The gap between the informal market and the official rate
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), set on August 1 at 615 CUP per dollar and 707 CUP per euro, remains significantly lower than the rates that apply in daily practice in the informal currency market.
The difference is 58 pesos in the case of the dollar and 78 pesos in the case of the euro.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange rate mechanism, its official quotation remains far from that of the informal market and does not meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population.
It is worth noting that the official dollar rate has risen from 585 CUP at the beginning of July to the current 615 CUP, indicating a sustained depreciation of the peso in the official channel as well.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state wages, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.
Methodology
The exchange rate from CiberCuba is an index of the Cuban informal market created through the automated analysis of thousands of currency trading posts in Telegram and Facebook groups.
The calculation eliminates atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each operation based on its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
