At 10:00 am, Cuban local time, opens this Friday, July 31, with a mixed day of activity: the dollar remains unchanged for the third consecutive session, the euro sees a slight decline, and the MLC loses some ground.

Overall, the market begins the last trading session of July with relative calm, although prices have seen significant increases compared to levels from a month ago.

The U.S. dollar is quoted at 673 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, with a buying rate of about 670 CUP and a selling rate of around 675 CUP.

It remains unchanged compared to the previous day and also compared to a week ago, reflecting a notable stability in the short term.

Exchange Rate Evolution

In a monthly perspective, however, the picture is quite different: 30 days ago, the dollar was around 620 pesos, indicating an increase of approximately 53 pesos, equivalent to a rise of 8.5% —although it's important to note that this comparison may partly reflect methodological adjustments in the index—.

In the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 620 CUP and a high of 675 CUP. It continues to dictate the informal market in a context of structural currency shortage.

The euro is quoted at 785 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a purchase price around 780 CUP and a selling price of about 790 CUP. This represents a drop of 1 peso compared to the previous day, when it was at 786 CUP, although the variation is minimal.

In the weekly comparison, the euro is gaining ground: a week ago it was at 778 CUP, marking an increase of 7 pesos in the last week, or a rise of 0.9%.

On the monthly chart, the trend is even more pronounced: 30 days ago, the euro was around 704 pesos, compared to the current 785, a difference of more than 81 pesos —with the same methodological caution applied to the 30-day comparison—. It surpasses the dollar by 112 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

The MLC is trading around 475 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buy price around 449 CUP and a sell price close to 501 CUP. This represents a decline of 3 pesos compared to the previous session, when it was at 478 CUP.

In the past week, it has dropped an additional 6.5 pesos, and over the last month, it has accumulated a decline of 13 pesos. Nevertheless, it is advisable to treat this value with caution: the MLC is characterized by low trading volume during this time period, so its quotation should be regarded as indicative.

Without a physical existence, its use is limited to the state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 673 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 785 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 475 CUP (indicative value, few data).

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 611 CUP per dollar and 704 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that are in practice on a daily basis in the informal currency market.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population.

The gap between the official dollar rate (611 CUP) and the informal one (673 CUP) exceeds 62 pesos; in the case of the euro, the difference between the official rate of 704 CUP and the 785 CUP in the parallel market is about 81 pesos.

In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state wages, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every variation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.

The Exchange Rate of CiberCuba is an index of the informal Cuban market developed from the automated analysis of thousands of currency buying and selling posts in Telegram and Facebook groups; the calculation excludes atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction according to its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
