The Gender Observatory of Alas Tensas (OGAT) confirmed this Sunday two new femicides in Cuba, raising the total number of recorded cases to 46 for the year so far.
According to reported by the organization on their social media, the victims are Adis Glennis Rodríguez Mulet, 34 years old and seven months pregnant; and Ana Luisa Baños González (46 years old), known as "La China," both allegedly murdered by their respective partners.
"We regret two new femicides in Cuba, where numerous cases continue to be reported despite the extreme disconnection and blackouts, which reveal that many more deaths remain in the silence of days without electric light," stated OGAT while announcing the cases.
Adis Glennis: She reported it, sought refuge, and was found by her attacker
Adis Glennis Rodríguez Mulet -known as "Adita"- passed away on July 29 in Bayamo, Granma province, as a result of the blows allegedly delivered by her partner.
The victim had previously reported the assaults and sought protection from the authorities, but her complaints were not addressed properly.
She had taken refuge in the family home to escape the abuse, but her aggressor found her there.
She suffered an abdominal-pelvic contusion with a tear in the hilum of the spleen and approximately two liters of blood in the peritoneal cavity. She underwent an emergency exploratory laparotomy and died from multiple organ failure.
The baby she was expecting also did not survive. Adis leaves behind a minor child.
OGAT was unequivocal: "This case demonstrates, once again, the serious failures in the protection of women victims of machismo violence. Adis had left the violent environment and was sheltered with her family when she was found by her aggressor. Her femicide and the death of the child she was carrying were preventable."
This crime is the second femicide of a pregnant woman documented in Cuba in less than three weeks. The first was that of Yeni María Peñas Leyva, 23 years old, who was murdered on July 13 in Las Tunas, allegedly by her ex-partner.
Ana Luisa Baños González: Murdered on July 14 in Pinar del Río
The observatory also reports the femicide of Ana Luisa Baños González, which occurred on July 14 in Paso Real de San Diego, in the municipality of Los Palacios, Pinar del Río.
She was the mother of three adult children and was allegedly murdered by her partner.
Previously, OGAT had requested support from the public on social media to gather details for the registry of this case, as the information is not publicly available.
“These preventable deaths clearly highlight the urgent need for shelters in Cuba, for the protection of women, their children, families, and the community itself. In the face of a femicide, specialized structures for protection are necessary,” concluded the observatory, which ended its publication with an urgent call: “They are killing us!”.
Without shelter, without law, without protection
Both crimes occur in an alarming escalation context. As of August 1, OGAT has recorded 46 femicides, 19 attempts, and two murders of men due to femicide violence in Cuba during 2026.
The number of fatalities represents an increase of approximately 112% compared to the same period in 2025.
Since it began its monitoring in 2019, the observatory has documented 359 feminicides on the island.
The pattern is consistent: 83.3% of cases are perpetrated by partners or ex-partners; 64.6% involve bladed weapons, and 62.5% occur in the victim's own home.
Cuba lacks a comprehensive law against gender-based violence. The Penal Code in effect since 2022 does not classify femicide as an independent crime, and the National Assembly rejected an amendment to include it as a separate criminal offense. The specific regulations are not scheduled to appear in the legislative agenda until 2028.
The country also lacks specialized shelters for women at risk.
After the closure of the Yo Sí Te Creo Observatory in Cuba in April due to a lack of resources, OGAT is the only active independent observatory monitoring this issue on the island.
