The Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant, the largest in Cuba, was reconnected to the National Electric System (SEN) this Tuesday after days of repair work and amid the recovery from the seventh nationwide blackout of the year.
At 10:55 in the morning, the Electric Union (UNE) confirmed through its official WhatsApp channel that the plant in Matanzas had come online: "The Unit of the CTE Antonio Guiteras is online, increasing load."
Additionally, the entity informed on Facebook that: "The province of Santiago de Cuba has been successfully incorporated into the system."
La Guiteras had begun a cold start this Monday at 10:17 in the morning, after receiving power from the national grid, with the hope of synchronizing with the SEN in the early hours of the night.
Specialists from the plant explained to Tv Yumurí that cold startup is a “procedure that requires more execution time due to the technical conditions of the equipment.”
On July 26, the generating unit was forced to leave the system after experiencing new failures in the economizer and the low-temperature air reheater, essential components that have repeatedly broken down in recent months.
It was necessary to carry out specialized welding tasks and conduct three hydraulic tests to verify the effectiveness of the applied solutions in order to restart the unit.
Her new integration into the SEN comes amid an extreme energy crisis. Hours earlier, UNE had reported that the system was already interconnected from Pinar del Río to Holguín, while work continued to include Guantánamo, Granma, and Santiago de Cuba. The latter province managed to reconnect on Tuesday morning.
