El Chileno, a former wrestling practitioner known in Isla de la Juventud, currently dedicates a significant part of his life to feeding, rescuing, and finding homes for abandoned animals on the streets of the special municipality.
The story was shared this Tuesday by Radio Caribe, in a post that highlighted the transformation of the former athlete into an animal protector.
Currently, El Chileno is caring for eight dogs and two cats with kittens that are ready to be put up for adoption.
Also, he walks the streets bringing water and food to homeless dogs and cats.
But her work doesn't end with feeding them. On some occasions, she takes in animals, provides them with care at her home, and looks after them until she finds people willing to adopt them.
The protector is part of the group Rescue and Animal Protection Island of Youth, an initiative dedicated to helping abandoned animals and promoting their adoption. Radio Caribe described it as "an angel" and highlighted the love and tenderness with which this work is carried out.
The publication recalled that, during his youth, El Chileno trained in wrestling and became a recognized champion in the Pinar del Río territory.
Her story is part of the larger narrative of numerous Cubans who support animal rescue with their own resources.
In 2025 in Havana, for example, Carmen had become a key figure in animal protection in El Cotorro, where she coordinated rescues and mobilized assistance without state support.
A year earlier, the case of Nélida was widely known, a Cuban woman who fed colonies of stray cats in Old Havana, as well as that of Odalis León, who in 2023 turned her home into a shelter for more than 60 dogs and two cats.
The work of these protectors is crucial for animals that rely on individual solidarity, especially in a context marked by a shortage of food, veterinary medicines, and shelter spaces.
Thanks to them, animals in Cuba have a real chance of survival.
