The Cuban national baseball team defeated Colombia 3-0 this Wednesday at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium in Santo Domingo, a result that keeps their hopes alive for competing for the gold medal in the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games.
With this victory, Cuba has a record of 3-1 in the super round and is currently in second place in the standings, only behind the undefeated Panama (3-0), which is the only team that has defeated them in this phase.
The game was decided in the second inning when the Cubans scored the three runs that would prove to be decisive.
Yulieski Remón hit a single and drove in two runs, while Luis Vicente Mateo brought home the third with another hit, establishing a lead that the team never relinquished throughout the game.
The standout player of the game was pitcher José Ignacio Bermúdez, who worked five and two-thirds innings, allowed only two hits, and struck out eight to secure his second victory in the tournament.
Yankiel Mauris replaced Bermúdez and retired a batter, and Armando Dueñas closed the game by recording the final three outs.
On the Colombian side, Víctor Daniel Vargas took the loss after four innings in which he allowed three runs. The only player to hit two singles throughout the game was the Cuban Yoel Yanqui.
The Caribbean team, led by Germán Mesa, reaches this stage with only one loss in the super round, which occurred on Tuesday against Panama.
Mesa, who has emphasized the group's cohesion and the strength of the pitching staff as key factors in their performance, stated that the team is "completely satisfied" with their performance and underscored: "We are not working randomly."
Cuba reached the super round with a perfect record of 3-0 after defeating in the preliminary round Curaçao, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.
After the results of this Wednesday, the super round table stands as follows: Panama (3-0), Cuba (3-1), Puerto Rico (2-1), Dominican Republic (1-2), Nicaragua (1-2), and Colombia (0-4).
According to the tournament format, the two highest-ranked teams at the end of the super round will compete for the gold medal on Thursday, while the third and fourth place teams will face off for the bronze.
Cuba has not won the baseball title at the Central American and Caribbean Games since Veracruz 2014, when it defeated Nicaragua 9-3 in the final, making Santo Domingo 2026 a critical opportunity to reclaim the throne in the sport it has historically dominated in the region.
